The Kosi Bay–Ponta do Ouro border
Kosi Bay on the South African side, Ponta do Ouro on the Mozambican side: a small coastal post, much quieter than Lebombo. Your driver handles the car’s papers and helps you through both sides; all you do is show your passport.
What if we get there after it closes?
We won’t. The South African side closes at 17:00 for most of the year, so we plan the whole day around reaching it with hours to spare, and confirm the hours for your date.
Do we get out of the car?
Yes, you go through passport control on foot on each side, with your driver helping you at every step while they take care of the car.
What do I need to cross?
Your passport, and your Mozambique entry arranged before you arrive if your nationality needs it. Our visas and entry guide explains it. Check yours before you travel: nobody can cross the border for you.
What if we’re travelling with children?
Bring each child’s own passport. South Africa’s Border Management Authority also asks travellers with children to carry written consent for minors, for example from a parent who isn’t on the trip.

How far is the drive from Durban to Mozambique?
About 560 km to Maputo, a full day.
Durban is about 560 km from Maputo by road via the Kosi Bay border: up the N2 through KwaZulu-Natal to Kosi Bay, across to Ponta do Ouro, then about 120 km of tarred coast road over the Katembe bridge into Maputo. That’s around seven and a half hours of driving; allow 8 to 9 hours door to door with the border. Going round through Eswatini or the Lebombo border adds well over 100 km, which is why we take the coast.
