    What if my flight is late?

    If we’re collecting you from Maputo airport, we track your flight, and your driver meets you in arrivals with your name on a sign.

    Do we change cars at the border?

    No. The same car and the same driver take you the whole way, from your door in Maputo to your door in Eswatini.

    What if we don’t speak Portuguese?

    You won’t need it. Everything is planned in advance, so your driver already knows where you’re going. And our drivers always do their best to communicate with you on the way.

    The Goba–Mhlumeni border

    About 80 km west past Boane to Goba on the Mozambican side, Mhlumeni on the Eswatini side, a quieter post than the main crossings into South Africa. Your driver handles the car’s papers and helps you through both sides; all you do is show your passport.

    What if the border closes before we get there?

    It doesn’t close. The Eswatini government lists Goba–Mhlumeni as a 24-hour post, which is exactly why we use it.

    Do we get out of the car?

    Yes, you go through passport control on foot on each side, with your driver helping you at every step while they take care of the car.

    What do I need to cross?

    Your passport, and a visa for Eswatini if your nationality needs one. Check yours before you travel: nobody can cross the border for you.

    Do we need different money?

    Not if you carry rand. The lilangeni is fixed one to one with the South African rand, and rand notes are legal tender in Eswatini too. The clock is the same as Mozambique’s.

    What if we’re driving after dark?

    No problem. Our drivers are local and very experienced on these roads at night.

How far is Mbabane from Maputo?

About 220 km, 3 to 4 hours.

Mbabane, the capital of Eswatini, is about 220 km from Maputo by road: west past Boane to the Goba border, about 80 km, then up through the Lubombo hills and on through Manzini. The driving takes about three and a quarter hours; allow 3 to 4 with the border. Manzini is about 190 km from Maputo, the Ezulwini valley about 206 km and King Mswati III airport about 157 km, all for the same fare.

How much is a private transfer from Maputo to Mbabane?
A private Maputo–Mbabane transfer is $235 (≈ 15,000 MZN) per vehicle, one way, and the same back to Maputo. The Ezulwini valley, Manzini and King Mswati III International Airport are the same fare. It's one fixed price for the car, with fuel and tolls included.
Is it a taxi, a shuttle or a private driver?
Call it whichever you like: it's a private shuttle, a taxi booked ahead and a driver for the day, all in one. The car and the driver are just for your group, nobody else gets on, and you choose when to leave. It's one fixed price per car, not per seat, whichever way you're going.
How do I pay for the transfer?
In cash, or online with a payment link we send you in the WhatsApp chat. Whichever you choose, the price is the fixed fare per car we agreed, with fuel and tolls included.
How long does it take from Maputo to Mbabane?
Three to four hours for the roughly 220 km, border included. The driving itself is about three and a quarter hours; the Goba crossing is the part that varies. Manzini and the Ezulwini valley are a little closer, and King Mswati III airport closer still, about 157 km from Maputo.
Which border do you cross into Eswatini?
Goba on the Mozambican side, Mhlumeni on the Eswatini side, about 80 km west of Maputo. The Eswatini government lists it as a 24-hour post, which is why we use it rather than Namaacha/Lomahasha, which closes at 20:00. Our border crossings guide compares every post.
What do I need at the border?
Your passport, and a visa for Eswatini, or for Mozambique on the way back, if your nationality needs one. Check yours before you travel, because nobody can cross the border on your behalf; our visas and entry guide covers the Mozambique side. Is it Eswatini or Swaziland?
Both names mean the same country. Swaziland was renamed the Kingdom of Eswatini in 2018, and you'll still hear and read both. Our transfer is the same wherever you're going in the country: Mbabane, the Ezulwini valley, Manzini or the airport.
Does Eswatini use a different currency or time zone?
Eswatini's lilangeni is fixed one to one with the South African rand, and rand notes are legal tender there too (Central Bank of Eswatini), so if you're carrying rand you're fine. The clock is the same as Mozambique's, so there's nothing to reset when you cross.
Can you take us on to Kruger or Johannesburg from Eswatini?
Tell us where you're going and we'll quote it. Kruger's southern gates and Nelspruit sit north of Eswatini, and Johannesburg is a day's drive west; if you're doing Maputo, Eswatini and South Africa in one trip, send us the plan and we'll tell you honestly which legs we drive and what each costs.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car — not a 4x4 — carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book.
Is the transfer car a 4x4? My lodge says I need one.
Our standard transfer cars aren't 4x4s — so if your lodge sits at the end of a sand or rough access track, you must tell us when you book. We do have 4x4s and will happily arrange one, but we don't run the lodges, so we can't know what each access road requires. Check with your accommodation, tell us on WhatsApp, and we'll send the right vehicle.
