The route
How to get from Maputo to Eswatini.
Mbabane is roughly 220 km from Maputo — about three and a quarter hours of driving, three to four with the border. There are two crossings into Eswatini from the Maputo side, and they’re close together: Goba / Mhlumeni, which the Eswatini government lists as open 24 hours, and Namaacha / Lomahasha to its south, open 07:00 to 20:00. We use Goba.
From Maputo the road runs west past Boane to the Goba post, about 80 km and an hour and twenty minutes. Across the line it climbs through the Lubombo hills to Siteki, then drops onto the MR3 through Manzini and up into Mbabane, the capital, up in the highveld and noticeably cooler than the coast you have just left.
Most people aren’t going to Mbabane itself. The Ezulwini valley between Manzini and Mbabane is where the lodges, the craft markets and Mlilwane wildlife sanctuary are; Manzini is the commercial centre; and King Mswati III International Airport is out on the eastern side near Sikhuphe, about 160 km from Maputo. All three are the same $235 as Mbabane, and Hlane Royal National Park is a short detour to the north if you want to stop.
Two things that don’t change at the border: the time and, in practice, the money. Eswatini keeps the same clock as Mozambique, and its lilangeni is fixed one to one with the South African rand, which is accepted throughout the country.
It runs the same in reverse. Mbabane to Maputo is the identical private, door-to-door service for the same $235.

The part everyone asks about
Crossing at Goba.
The Goba border post is the northern of the two road crossings between Maputo and Eswatini, known as Mhlumeni on the Eswatini side and sitting about 80 km west of the city. It is a quiet post by the standards of the region, and the Eswatini government lists it as open 24 hours — which is why we use it rather than Namaacha / Lomahasha, whose gates close at 20:00. Hours are adjusted from time to time, so we confirm them close to your date.
You’ll need your passport, and a visa for Eswatini or Mozambique if your nationality requires one — that part is yours to check and ours to plan around, because no operator can cross a border on your behalf. Your driver deals with the vehicle paperwork on both sides, which is the part that catches out self-drivers in a hired car.
Is it safe? The road is tarred on both sides and our drivers run it regularly. The genuine variable on this route is the queue at the post, not the driving — and at Goba it’s usually a short one.
