A 10-day Mozambique itinerary built around the southern coast hits the sweet spot for first-time visitors: Maputo for a day, Tofo for whale sharks and surf, then Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Archipelago for islands and dhow days. This is the route we’d plan for a friend — with honest transit times, real lodge picks, and the trade-offs we’d flag in person.

The shape of the trip

DaysWhereWhy
1Arrival in MaputoOne night to land, eat, sleep
2Maputo culture dayMafalala walking tour, Núcleo de Arte, FEIMA market
3–5TofoDiving, whale sharks, Tofinho surf
6Drive Tofo → Vilanculos (~5h)Coastal drive on the EN1
7–9Vilanculos & Bazaruto ArchipelagoIslands, dhows, beach
10Fly out via MaputoVilanculos (VNX) → Maputo (MPM) → home

10 nights total. Slightly more time on the islands than in Tofo — that’s deliberate. The islands are what most travellers remember.

Day 1 — Land in Maputo

You’ll arrive at Maputo Airport (MPM) in the late afternoon or evening on most international routings (TAP from Lisbon, Ethiopian via Addis, Qatar via Doha, Turkish via Istanbul, or Airlink/SAA via Johannesburg).

What to do:

  • Get to your hotel in Polana, Sommerschield, or downtown. Yango (the local ride-hail) works.
  • Eat seafood. Recommendations: Mundo’s for casual, Sagres for the harbour, Costa do Sol for old-Maputo atmosphere.
  • Don’t try to do the city tonight. Rest.

Stay: Polana Serena Hotel (the historic option), Hotel Cardoso, or one of the boutique guesthouses in Sommerschield.

Day 2 — Maputo culture day

A full day in the capital. Maputo is a working African city, not a polished tourist town — it rewards walking and curiosity.

Morning:

  • Mafalala walking tour. A neighbourhood that produced Eusébio, Mia Couto, and the heart of Mozambique’s resistance music. Run by Iverca or local guides.
  • Iron House (Casa de Ferro) — designed by Eiffel, never quite worked as a residence, now a curiosity.
  • Tunduru Botanical Gardens for a quiet hour.

Afternoon:

  • FEIMA market for artisan crafts.
  • Núcleo de Arte — Mozambique’s most important contemporary art collective. The work made from decommissioned weapons after the civil war is unforgettable.
  • Polana waterfront for sunset.

Evening: dinner anywhere with grilled prawns. The camarão à laurentina is the Maputo dish.

Day 3 — Fly to Inhambane, transfer to Tofo

Morning flight on LAM Mozambique Airlines or Airlink from Maputo to Inhambane (INH), about 50 minutes. Pre-arrange the Tofo transfer — 22 km from the airport on a paved road, about 30 minutes.

Tofo is small and beach-shack relaxed. Drop your bags, walk down to the sand, eat at one of the beach restaurants, and ease into the pace.

Stay: Casa Barry (long-running classic), Tofo Mar (more polished), or one of the beach guesthouses.

Day 4 — Diving or snorkeling at Tofo

This is the day that puts Tofo on the map. Choose:

  • Whale shark and manta ocean safari — a 2-hour boat trip looking for whale sharks (year-round, peak July–October), manta rays at Manta Reef, and humpback whales (June–October). No certification needed.
  • Two-tank dive at Manta Reef or one of the offshore reefs. Manta Reef has resident giant manta rays.
  • Snorkel trip to the inner reefs.

The dive shops to look at: Diversity Scuba, Tofo Scuba, Peri-Peri Divers.

Afternoon: walk south along the beach to Tofinho point, watch the surfers, drink something at Casa na Praia.

Day 5 — Tofinho surf, slow Tofo day

A second day in Tofo — for the second dive, a surf lesson at Tofinho, or just doing nothing. There’s a market in town worth a wander; the curio sellers know how to find you.

If you have surplus energy: drive to Inhambane city (15 km west) for an afternoon. Old Portuguese cathedral, dhow harbour, the most atmospheric small town on this coast.

Day 6 — Drive Tofo to Vilanculos

About 5 hours on the EN1, paved end to end. Beautiful coastal landscape, baobabs, road-side fruit stalls. Pre-arrange a transfer or hire a private driver.

Stops worth making:

  • Inhassoro for a long coffee on the dhow harbour.
  • Mapinhane for a quick break.

Arrive Vilanculos late afternoon. Settle in, walk down to the bay, watch the sunset over the Bazaruto islands.

Stay: Casa Babi (homely), Bahia Mar Boutique (mid-range), Santorini Beach Resort (more polished), or one of the lodges along the bay.

Day 7 — Bazaruto + Benguerra day trip

The day everyone remembers. Speed boat from Vilanculos out to the archipelago (~1 hour), snorkel Two Mile Reef (one of the most biodiverse reefs in southern Africa), beach lunch on Benguerra, return through the Pansy Sand flat (a famous sandbar that emerges at low tide).

This is our signature day trip — see the page for the full plan.

Day 8 — Magaruque or Santa Carolina

Pick the second island day:

  • Magaruque — closest to Vilanculos (25 min). Calm lagoon, gentle pace, ideal if Day 7 was busy.
  • Santa Carolina (Paradise Island) — longer boat ride, the most cinematic beach in the country, Paradise Island Hotel ruins.

Afternoon back in town. Sundowner at Marimba Bar on the dhow harbour.

Day 9 — Vilanculos at your own pace

A buffer day. The Indian Ocean weather isn’t always cooperative; this is the day that absorbs a postponed island trip if needed. Otherwise:

  • Quad-bike the back roads and coastal tracks around town with our quad rental.
  • Whale watching in season (July–October) — humpbacks pass close to shore.
  • Kitesurfing lesson on the bay.
  • Or do nothing. That’s an option.

Day 10 — Fly out

Morning flight from Vilanculos (VNX) to Maputo (MPM) or directly to Johannesburg (JNB) — both routes exist. From there, your international connection home.

Tip: build in a buffer day at Maputo or Johannesburg if your international flight leaves the same evening. LAM and Airlink schedules can shift; you don’t want a same-day connection to fail.

What to skip on a 10-day trip

Things travellers often try to add and shouldn’t, on this length:

  • Gorongosa National Park — incredible, but it’s a separate trip. Centre of the country, requires its own flight via Beira and 2–3 days minimum.
  • The Quirimbas — fly-only, far north, 3+ days minimum once you’ve factored the transfers. Save for a 14-day trip.
  • Kruger / Big Five safari — Mozambique isn’t the country for it. If you want a Big Five safari, do it in South Africa before or after. EKAYA doesn’t operate land safaris and we’re honest about it.
  • Maputo + 7 days on one island. You’ll regret skipping Tofo. The diving here is the best on the southern coast.

What to add if you have a few extra days

  • +2 days for Tofo. A second dive day, more time on the beach.
  • +1 night on Benguerra Island — &Beyond Benguerra Island Lodge or Azura Benguerra. The most romantic version of the trip.
  • +2 days at the start in Maputo — cultural Maputo deserves it.

Logistics summary

  • Visa: Apply for the ETA online at evisa.gov.mz at least a week before flying. See our visa guide.
  • Money: Mozambican Metical (MZN). Cards work in cities, USD/ZAR widely accepted near the borders, cash king everywhere else. See our money guide.
  • Health: Malaria zone — bring prophylaxis, prevent bites from dusk to dawn, and test quickly for any fever. See our health guide.
  • Language: Portuguese is the lingua franca. English in tourism areas. A few phrases of bom dia / obrigado go a long way.

Common questions

Still on your mind.

Is 10 days enough for Mozambique?
Yes, for the southern coast. Ten days is enough to do Maputo (1–2 days), Tofo (2–3 days), and Vilanculos plus the Bazaruto Archipelago (4–5 days) without rushing. It’s not enough to add the Quirimbas or Gorongosa — those are 14+ day trips. If you only have 10 days and you’ve never been here, this is the route.
What is the best 10-day Mozambique route?
Start in Maputo (1 night), fly or drive to Inhambane/Tofo (2–3 nights), then continue to Vilanculos (4–5 nights including Bazaruto Archipelago days), and fly out via Vilanculos or Maputo. Most people fly back through Maputo for the international connection. The reverse direction works too, especially if you’re flying in via Johannesburg to Vilanculos directly.
Should I drive or fly between cities?
Fly Maputo ↔ Vilanculos. The drive is around 10–12 hours on the EN1 and you lose a full day. Flights with LAM or Airlink take ~1.5 hours. Drive Vilanculos ↔ Tofo — about 5 hours on a paved road, scenic, and there’s no commercial flight between them. The drive between Maputo and Tofo is 6–7 hours and many South African travellers do it; international travellers usually fly.
When should I do this 10-day itinerary?
Best months are May to October — dry season, calm seas, best diving conditions, and humpback whales pass through June–October. November to April still works but expect heat, afternoon storms, and a small cyclone risk in February in the central coast. See our full best-time guide.
What's a realistic budget for 10 days in Mozambique?
Mozambique is mid-priced for southern Africa — cheaper than Kenya or Tanzania safaris, more expensive than Malawi or Zambia. Mid-range trips with comfortable lodges, internal flights, day trips to the islands, and good food are usually $2,000–3,500 USD per person. Budget shoestring (camping, chapas, self-catering) can be under $1,000. Luxury (Anantara Bazaruto, &Beyond Benguerra) climbs fast. Send us your dates and we’ll quote a real number.
Do I need a 4WD?
Not for this itinerary. The EN1 is paved end to end. The road into Tofo is paved. Vilanculos town is fine in any car. You’d only need a 4WD if you’re going off-grid (Pomene, deep into Cabo Delgado, or the inland tracks). Most international travellers don’t self-drive at all — transfers and internal flights are easier and not much more expensive.
