Tofo is about 500 km north of Maputo by road, about 8h30 by car. The road runs north on the EN1, Mozambique’s main coastal highway, then through Inhambane city for the last 22 km to Tofo Beach, and it’s paved the whole way.

Is it a taxi, a shuttle or a private driver?
Call it whichever you like: it's a private shuttle, a taxi booked ahead and a driver for the day, all in one. The car and the driver are just for your group, nobody else gets on, you choose when to leave, and we collect you at your hotel or the airport. It's one fixed price of $285 per car, not per seat, whichever way you're going.

How far is Tofo from Maputo, and how long is the drive?
Tofo is about 500 km north of Maputo by road, about 8h30 by car, up the EN1 and then through Inhambane to the beach. It's paved the whole way. We stop on the way when you need to stretch your legs or eat, and we leave when it suits you, not on a timetable.
Do you run Tofo to Maputo as well?
Yes, exactly the same private, door-to-door service in the other direction, at the same $285. It's an easy way back to the capital for a flight home: tell us your flight time and we'll plan the departure around it.
Can you drop us at Tofo Beach itself?
Yes, we drop you at the door, wherever you're staying on Praia do Tofo, and the fare is the same for Tofinho just south or Barra up the coast. Tell us the name of your lodge, camp or guesthouse when you message.
What's the closest airport to Tofo?
Inhambane (INH), about 30 minutes from the beach. If you fly in there instead of driving from Maputo, we'll meet you in arrivals with your name on a sign: see our Inhambane airport transfer.
Can we break the drive and sleep a night on the way?
Yes, the drive doesn't have to be done in one day. If you'd rather stop a night, or a few, somewhere along the way and carry on in the morning, we'll drive it that way. Tell us where you want to stop and how many nights when you message, and we'll build the route around it and confirm the fare.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car (not a 4x4) carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing dive gear, boards or a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Is the transfer car a 4x4? My lodge says I need one.
Our standard transfer cars aren't 4x4s, so if your lodge sits at the end of a sand or rough access track, you must tell us when you book. We do have 4x4s and will happily arrange one, but we don't run the lodges, so we can't know what each access road requires. Check with your accommodation, tell us on WhatsApp, and we'll send the right vehicle.

Is it dangerous to drive at night in Mozambique?
We wouldn't recommend tourists driving themselves at night: the roads are unfamiliar, lighting is limited, and animals and pedestrians share the roadside after dark. Our drivers are local and very experienced with night driving, so they know the roads and the conditions, so a late flight or an early start is no problem. And if part of your trip is self-drive, we can put a driver on that stretch too.
