Mozambique trip cost.

Honest budget bands. No hidden surprises.

What does a trip to Mozambique actually cost? Budget bands by tier, day-to-day prices, and the hidden costs no one tells you about.

A 10-day Mozambique trip costs $2,000–3,500 USD per person at the mid-range tier most international travellers fly for — comfortable lodges, internal flights, day trips, and meals included. International flights are extra. Backpacker shoestring is roughly half of that; luxury private-island stays are several multiples. Mozambique sits mid-priced for southern Africa — cheaper than Kenya or Tanzania safari trips, more expensive than Malawi or Zambia.

Plan for these

Hidden costs that surprise people.

  • Mozambique visa or ETA. $10–48 USD for the ETA (29 countries); $95–290 USD for the e-visa (everyone else, depending on 30/60/90 days). See our visa guide.
  • Bazaruto National Park entry fee. Charged on island day trips and overnight stays inside the park. We include it in our quotes; check on independent operators.
  • ATM withdrawal fees. Mozambican ATMs typically charge MZN 200–300 per withdrawal, plus your home bank’s foreign transaction fee. Bring USD or ZAR cash for backup. Money guide.
  • Travel insurance with medical evacuation. Not optional — serious medical evacuates to Johannesburg. Budget $50–150 for a 2-week policy.
  • Yellow fever certificate if you’ve transited a yellow-fever country. The vaccine itself is $50–150 depending on where you’re vaccinated.
  • Malaria prophylaxis. $30–100 for a full course depending on the drug, plus quality repellent for dusk-to-dawn protection. Health guide.
  • Tipping. ~10% at restaurants, $5–10 per day for boat crews on day trips. Budget ~5% on top of the trip cost.

Common questions

Still on your mind.

How much does a trip to Mozambique cost?
A 10-day mid-range Mozambique trip is usually $2,000–3,500 USD per person including internal flights, comfortable lodges, day trips, and meals. Backpacker shoestring is $50–80/day ($500–800 for 10 days). Premium (top lodges in Vilanculos and Tofo) is $400–800/day. Luxury private-island stays (Anantara Bazaruto, &Beyond Benguerra, Vamizi) push past $1,000/day. International flights are extra.
Is Mozambique expensive compared to other African countries?
Mid-priced. Cheaper than Kenya or Tanzania safari trips, more expensive than Malawi or Zambia. Imported goods (alcohol, electronics, premium foods) carry a tax that makes them more expensive than you'd expect; local food, transport, and basic accommodation are cheap by international standards. The biggest cost driver in any Mozambique trip is internal flights and the mid-to-high-end lodges.
Can I visit Mozambique on a budget?
Yes. Budget travellers stay in beach guesthouses ($20–40/night), eat at local churrasqueiras (grilled-fish places, $5–10 a meal), travel by chapa (minibus) on the EN1, and skip the private-island lodges. A two-week southern-coast trip on a backpacker budget is realistic at $700–1,200 USD per person excluding international flights.
What does daily life cost in Mozambique?
A few realistic numbers: 1.5L bottled water ~MZN 60 ($1 USD), local beer (2M, Laurentina) ~MZN 80–120 in a bar, street chamussa ~MZN 20, sit-down meal at a beach restaurant MZN 400–800 ($6–13), SIM card with data ~MZN 200, tuk-tuk in town MZN 100–200, chapa long-distance Maputo→Vilanculos around MZN 1,500–2,000.
How much do tours and day trips cost?
Our flagship Bazaruto + Benguerra day trip starts at $120 per person; the Magaruque day trip at $110; Santa Carolina at $150. Kids under 10 are 50% off. Surf lessons in Tofo are 1,500 MZN (~$24) per person. Diving in Tofo runs $80–120 per two-tank dive depending on the operator.
When is the cheapest time to visit Mozambique?
March to early May — the rains are tapering off, lodges drop their rates, and the country feels quieter. November is also worth looking at. Peak season is July–September, when prices are highest and the popular lodges fill up. See our best-time-to-visit guide.
Do I need to budget for tipping?
Yes, modestly. 10% at restaurants if service was good. $5–10 per day for boat crews and guides on day trips, more for multi-day stays. $2–5 per bag for porters at airports and lodges. Lodge staff appreciate small individual tips (USD or MZN) at the end of the stay; a tip jar at reception isn't the norm here.
What hidden costs should I plan for?
A few that surprise people: Mozambique visa or ETA ($10–48 USD; e-visa $95–290 depending on duration); Bazaruto National Park entry fee on island days; airport tax on domestic flights (usually built into the ticket); cash withdrawal fees from Mozambican ATMs (typically MZN 200–300 per withdrawal); fuel surcharges on private transfers when oil prices move.
