Overview
Two hours, one sail, the whole sky turning.
The Sunset Dhow Cruise is a two-hour sail on Vilanculos Bay aboard a traditional wooden dhow — timed so you're on the water as the sun drops behind the mainland and the whole sky turns. Just the sail and the wind, the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago on the horizon.
It's the slowest, quietest way to end a day in Vilanculos — and the one guests most often tell us they remember. A dhow doesn't roar; it leans into the wind and goes quiet. You sit back, watch the light change over the bay, and let a crew who've sailed these waters their whole lives do the work.
Want to know more about the boat itself? Read what a dhow is and where it came from — the sailboat that built the Indian Ocean, still working this coast today.

Itinerary
The day, hour by hour.
- Late afternoon
We meet you on the beach
Timing shifts with the season — sunset is earlier in winter, later in summer — so we'll confirm your pickup time when you book. Quick safety briefing, life jackets, and we push off from the beachfront.
- Golden hour
Up goes the sail
Once we're clear of the shallows, the crew raises the sail and the bay goes quiet. We sail out toward the channel with the islands ahead and the town falling away behind.
- Sunset
The sky turns
We position for the sunset over the mainland — the part everyone came for. The light does what it does on this coast: orange, then pink, then the kind of purple that doesn't photograph as well as it looks.
- After dark
Sail back in
We sail back to the beach in the last of the light, usually with the first stars coming out. You're back in time for dinner in town.
