A traditional wooden dhow under sail at sunset on Vilanculos Bay, Mozambique

Vilanculos Bay · Mozambique

Sunset dhow cruise
on Vilanculos Bay.

Overview

Two hours, one sail, the whole sky turning.

The Sunset Dhow Cruise is a two-hour sail on Vilanculos Bay aboard a traditional wooden dhow — timed so you're on the water as the sun drops behind the mainland and the whole sky turns. Just the sail and the wind, the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago on the horizon.

It's the slowest, quietest way to end a day in Vilanculos — and the one guests most often tell us they remember. A dhow doesn't roar; it leans into the wind and goes quiet. You sit back, watch the light change over the bay, and let a crew who've sailed these waters their whole lives do the work.

Want to know more about the boat itself? Read what a dhow is and where it came from — the sailboat that built the Indian Ocean, still working this coast today.

Itinerary

The day, hour by hour.

  1. Late afternoon

We meet you on the beach

Timing shifts with the season — sunset is earlier in winter, later in summer — so we'll confirm your pickup time when you book. Quick safety briefing, life jackets, and we push off from the beachfront.

  2. Golden hour

    Up goes the sail

Once we're clear of the shallows, the crew raises the sail and the bay goes quiet. We sail out toward the channel with the islands ahead and the town falling away behind.

  3. Sunset

    The sky turns

We position for the sunset over the mainland — the part everyone came for. The light does what it does on this coast: orange, then pink, then the kind of purple that doesn't photograph as well as it looks.

  4. After dark

    Sail back in

We sail back to the beach in the last of the light, usually with the first stars coming out. You're back in time for dinner in town.

Sailing back toward the Vilanculos shore in the last light after sunset

Questions we get

Before you book.

What time does the sunset dhow leave?
Late afternoon, timed so you're on the water for the sunset — which means the exact time shifts through the year (earlier in the June–August winter, later in the December–February summer). We confirm your pickup time when you book, based on the date.
Can I bring drinks?
Yes — please do. The trip is the sail itself, so we don't include food or drinks, but most guests bring a sundowner for the boat. The local move is a rum and raspberry; a cold beer or a bottle of wine works just as well. Just take your empties back with you.
Is it good for kids?
Yes — it's a calm, short sail and life jackets are provided. It works well for families. For very young children, message us first and we'll tell you honestly whether the conditions that week suit it.
Can we book the dhow just for us?
Yes. The sunset dhow is lovely as a private trip — for a couple, a honeymoon, a proposal, or a small group. Message us for private charter pricing and we'll set it up.
What if it's windy or raining?
Safety first — we don't sail in unsafe conditions. A dhow needs a workable breeze (too little and you don't move; too much and it's no longer relaxing), so if the weather doesn't suit your evening, we'll reschedule or refund. We'd rather move the trip than give you a bad one.
Is the dhow safe?
Yes. These are seaworthy working boats handled by crews who've sailed Vilanculos Bay their whole lives, and we provide life jackets for everyone. The cruise stays in the sheltered bay, not the open ocean.
How is this different from a dhow island day trip?
Completely different day. The sunset cruise is a short, calm two hours on the bay at the end of the day — no islands, no snorkeling, just the sail and the sunset. For a full day out to the islands — a proper dhow safari and boat cruise to the Bazaruto Archipelago — see our island day trips. Many guests do both: an island day, and a sunset dhow on another evening.
Can we combine the dhow with the red dunes?
Yes — and it's a lovely way to get two things in one evening. Our Red Dunes Tour has a "by dhow" option: instead of circling the bay, you sail across aboard a traditional dhow, land near the dunes, and climb up for the sunset from the top. You still get the dhow sail — it just ends with a barefoot climb and the whole coast laid out below you, rather than back at the beach. If you want the dunes as well as the water, that's the trip to book.
How do we pay?
We accept cash, card, bank transfer, and mobile money. Payment terms are confirmed in your quote based on your booking details.
