How to get from Maputo to Johannesburg.

OR Tambo International is 538 km from Maputo, about seven and a half hours by road including the border — a full day’s drive, and the longest transfer we run out of the capital. The route goes east on the EN4 to Ressano Garcia, crosses at Lebombo, then west on the N4 past Nelspruit and Witbank into Johannesburg.

The drive is door to door at both ends — collected at your address in Maputo, dropped at the terminal or your hotel in Johannesburg — with no check-in queue, no connection to make and no baggage desk to argue with. For anyone travelling with gear or with family, that alone is often the reason to book it.

The economics work in your favour as the group grows. A family or a group of four pays one flat fare rather than four tickets. Dive gear, surfboards, fishing kit and the excess baggage an airline charges for all travel free in a car. And the road lets you break the journey — a night at Nelspruit or a few days in Kruger on the way through — which a direct flight cannot.

Between the border and Gauteng the N4 is a toll road — four plazas on the South African side and two on the Mozambican — and every one of them is inside our fare. Heading to Pretoria instead? That’s its own transfer, same $470, on the same road with a slightly earlier exit.

It runs the same in reverse. Johannesburg or OR Tambo to Maputo is the identical private, door-to-door service for the same $470, and we’ll meet your arrival if you send the flight number.

The part everyone asks about

Crossing at Ressano Garcia.

The Ressano Garcia border post is the main road crossing between Mozambique and South Africa, known as Lebombo on the South African side and sitting on the EN4 about an hour east of Maputo. It is the busiest land border either country operates, and it is the single thing that decides whether this drive is easy or long.

Timing is the whole trick. The South African side is open 06:00 to midnight daily, per the Border Management Authority’s ports-of-entry list, extending to 24 hours only over the Easter and mid-December to mid-January peaks — and hours are adjusted from time to time, so confirm them with South Africa’s Border Management Authority close to your date. What we do about it is simple: we set your departure so you reach the post well inside its hours, with margin for a queue, rather than arriving hopeful at the back end of the day.

You’ll need your passport, and a South African visa if your nationality requires one — that part is yours to check and ours to plan around, because no operator can cross a border on your behalf. Your driver deals with the vehicle paperwork on both sides, which is the part that catches out self-drivers in a hired car.

Is it safe? The road itself is paved, busy and unremarkable, and our drivers run it regularly. The genuine risk on this route is a late crossing, not the driving — which is exactly why we plan the day around the border instead of around the odometer.

Which border do you cross, and what do I need?
Ressano Garcia on the Mozambican side, Lebombo on the South African side — the main crossing between the two countries, on the EN4 east of Maputo. Bring your passport and, if you need one, a valid South African visa; check your own nationality's requirements before you travel, because we can't cross the border on your behalf. Your driver handles the vehicle paperwork.
Do you drop in Johannesburg itself, or only at the airport?
Anywhere in Johannesburg — Sandton, Rosebank, a house in the suburbs, a hotel near Park Station — for the same $470 as OR Tambo. The airport is simply the most common drop, not a different product. Tell us the address when you book.
Do you also run Maputo to Pretoria?

Will I make my flight out of OR Tambo?
That's what the flight number is for. On a seven-and-a-half-hour drive we set the pickup working backwards from your departure, with margin for the border and for check-in at a large international terminal. If the timing is genuinely tight, we'll tell you so rather than take the booking and hope.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car — not a 4x4 — carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
