    The Ressano Garcia–Lebombo border

    About 90 km west on the EN4 to the main crossing between Mozambique and South Africa: Ressano Garcia on the Mozambican side, the Lebombo border on the South African side. Your driver handles the car’s papers and helps you through both sides; all you do is show your passport.

    How long does the border take?

    It varies, and nobody publishes a typical wait. In our experience it’s slower at weekends and around public holidays, and busiest of all over Christmas–New Year and Easter (more than 30,000 people crossed in 24 hours on Christmas Eve 2025). So we build the border into your day and leave with enough margin that a slow queue doesn’t cost you your flight.

    Do we get out of the car?

    Yes, you go through passport control on foot on each side, with your driver helping you at every step while they take care of the car.

    What do I need to cross?

    Your passport, valid at least 30 days after you leave South Africa, with two blank pages, and a visa if your nationality needs one. Check yours before you travel: nobody can cross the border for you.

    What if we’re travelling with children?

    Bring each child’s own passport. South Africa’s Border Management Authority also asks travellers with children to carry written consent for minors, for example from a parent who isn’t on the trip.

How far is Johannesburg from Maputo?

538 km, about 7h30.

Johannesburg is 538 km from Maputo by road to OR Tambo International: west on the EN4 to the Ressano Garcia border, across at Lebombo, then the N4 past Nelspruit and eMalahleni (Witbank) into Gauteng. Allow about seven and a half hours, border included. It’s the longest transfer we run out of Maputo, and the N4 is a toll road: four plazas on the South African side and two on the Mozambican, all inside the fare.

That's per car, not per person, so it's one fare whether you're one traveller or four, with fuel and every toll on the way included.
Is it a taxi, a shuttle or a private driver?
Call it whichever you like: it's a private shuttle, a taxi booked ahead and a driver for the day, all in one. The car and the driver are just for your group, nobody else gets on, and you choose when to leave. It's one fixed price per car, not per seat, whichever way you're going.
How do I pay for the transfer?

How long does the drive from Maputo to Johannesburg take?
About seven and a half hours for the 538 km, border included. It's a full day on the road: west on the EN4 to Ressano Garcia, then along the N4 past Nelspruit and eMalahleni (Witbank) into Johannesburg. The border is the part that varies; in our experience it's slower at weekends and around public holidays, and busiest over Christmas–New Year and Easter.
Will I make my flight out of OR Tambo?
Send us your flight time when you book. On a drive this long we set the pickup working back from your departure, with margin for the border and for check-in at a big international airport. If the timing is genuinely tight, we'll tell you honestly and suggest an earlier start.
Do you drop in Johannesburg itself, or only at the airport?
Anywhere in Johannesburg, Sandton, Rosebank or a house in the suburbs, for the same $470 as OR Tambo. The airport is simply the most common drop. Tell us the address when you book. Going to Pretoria instead? That's our Maputo to Pretoria transfer, same fare.
Which border do you cross, and what do I need?
Ressano Garcia on the Mozambican side, the Lebombo border on the South African side, on the EN4 west of Maputo. Bring your passport: South Africa asks for one valid at least 30 days after you leave the country, with at least two blank pages (Department of Home Affairs). Whether you also need a visa depends on your nationality, so check before you travel, because nobody can cross the border on your behalf.
What time does the border open?
Ressano Garcia/Lebombo has run 24 hours a day since 2022, South Africa's Border Management Authority said in April 2026, although its own port table still lists 06:00 to midnight, so check close to your date. Our border crossings guide compares every South Africa–Mozambique post.
Can we break the journey on the way?
Yes, and on a run this long plenty of people do. A night in Nelspruit, or a few days in Kruger, turns a hard day's drive into part of the trip. Tell us where you'd like to stop and for how long when you book, and we'll plan the legs and confirm the fare.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car — not a 4x4 — carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book.
Is the transfer car a 4x4? My lodge says I need one.
Our standard transfer cars aren't 4x4s — so if your lodge sits at the end of a sand or rough access track, you must tell us when you book. We do have 4x4s and will happily arrange one, but we don't run the lodges, so we can't know what each access road requires. Check with your accommodation, tell us on WhatsApp, and we'll send the right vehicle.
