Landing in Maputo

What to expect when you land at Maputo airport.

Maputo International Airport (MPM) is Mozambique’s main gateway and sits inside the city itself, on the northern side — so unlike most capitals there’s no long motorway run in, just a short drive through town to your hotel. Direct flights arrive from Johannesburg, Lisbon, Nairobi, Doha, Addis Ababa and Istanbul, as well as LAM’s domestic network from Vilanculos, Inhambane and Beira.

The sequence on arrival is immigration first — with a separate desk for travellers who need their visa or ETA checked — then baggage and customs in the same hall, then out into arrivals. That’s where your driver is standing with your name. Sort your visa or ETA before you fly and keep the printed approval handy; it’s the one thing that slows people down. There are ATMs and a currency counter at the airport, but you won’t need to draw cash for the car — the fare is settled when we’ve driven you, in dollars, rand or meticais, by mobile money, or by card through a payment link.

If Maputo is just your first night, we can keep going. The city is where most of our southern routes begin — Ponta do Ouro, Bilene, Xai-Xai, Tofo and Inhambane, Vilanculos, and over the border to Kruger and Johannesburg. How much is a taxi from Maputo airport to the city centre?

Airport taxis are unmetered and the fare is negotiated on the spot, and hotel shuttles usually charge per person, so a fixed per-car price is normally the cheapest option for two or more travellers.
Does Bolt or Yango work at Maputo airport?
Ride-hailing apps do operate in Maputo, but they need a working local SIM and data the moment you land, and the pickup point is outside the terminal. If you'd rather not sort any of that after a long flight, a pre-booked transfer puts a driver in arrivals with your name and a fare you already know — $25 per car to the main hotel districts.
How far is Maputo airport from the city?
Maputo International Airport sits inside the city, in the Mavalane area on the northern side — about 7 km from the Polana and Sommerschield hotel district, 6.5 km from the Baixa, and 10 km from Costa do Sol along the Avenida Marginal. Outside rush hour the drive to a Polana hotel is around 15 to 20 minutes; in evening traffic allow closer to half an hour.
Will someone be waiting when I land?
Yes. Send your flight number and arrival time and your driver will be in the arrivals area with your name, ready to load your bags and go. Immigration and the visa desk can take a while at MPM — we track your flight and wait for you, so there's nothing to rush.
Do you do night arrivals?
Yes. Several long-haul flights into Maputo land late, and a pre-booked driver is exactly the moment you want one — the price on this page is the price, day or night. Send your flight details and we'll be there whatever time you clear customs.
How do I pay for the transfer?
In cash — US dollars, South African rand or Mozambican meticais — by bank transfer or mobile money, or by card through a secure payment link we send you (there's no card machine in the car, so no tap-and-pay). Tell us which when you book. No deposit: the fare is confirmed on WhatsApp and settled when we've driven you.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The $25 and $35 fares are for a standard car carrying up to three passengers and their luggage — comfortably, not squeezed. If you're four or more or travelling with surfboards, dive gear or a lot of bags, say so when you message and we'll send a larger vehicle or a second car — and confirm the fare before you book.
Can you take me back to the airport for my departure too?
Yes. We collect you from your hotel in good time for check-in — same fixed fare, same door-to-door service, in the other direction. Give us your flight time and we'll plan the pickup around it.
Do you go further than the city — Ponta do Ouro, Bilene, Tofo, Kruger?
Yes. Maputo is where most of our southern routes start: Ponta do Ouro, Bilene, Xai-Xai, Inhambane and Tofo, Vilanculos, and across the border to Kruger, Nelspruit and Johannesburg. We can collect you at MPM and drive straight through, or break the trip with a night in the city. Tell us your final stop and we'll quote the whole journey.
Do I need a visa before I land in Maputo?
That depends on your passport. Many nationalities need an ETA or e-visa approved before travel rather than a visa on arrival, so check the rules for your passport before you fly — our visa guide walks through it. Have the printed approval ready for the immigration desk; your driver will be waiting on the other side.
