How the Maputo to Kruger private transfer works

    What if the price changes?

    Only a visa fee, if your nationality needs one. Everything for the trip itself is covered, so the only money you need on the way is for anything you’d like for yourselves, like food.

    What if my flight is late?

    If we’re collecting you from Maputo airport, we track your flight, and your driver meets you in arrivals with your name on a sign.

    Do we change cars at the border?

    No. The same car and the same driver take you the whole way, from your door in Maputo to your gate or lodge.

    What if we don’t speak Portuguese?

    You won’t need it. Everything is planned in advance, so your driver already knows where you’re going. And our drivers always do their best to communicate with you on the way.

    The Ressano Garcia–Lebombo border

    About 90 km west on the EN4 to the main crossing between Mozambique and South Africa: Ressano Garcia on the Mozambican side, the Lebombo border on the South African side. Your driver handles the car’s papers and helps you through both sides; all you do is show your passport.

    How long does the border take?

    It varies, and nobody publishes a typical wait. In our experience it’s slower at weekends and around public holidays, and busiest of all over Christmas–New Year and Easter (more than 30,000 people crossed in 24 hours on Christmas Eve 2025). So we build the border into your day and leave with enough margin that a slow queue doesn’t cost you your gate time.

    Do we get out of the car?

    Yes, you go through passport control on foot on each side, with your driver helping you at every step while they take care of the car.

    What do I need to cross?

    Your passport, valid at least 30 days after you leave South Africa, with two blank pages, and a visa if your nationality needs one. Check yours before you travel: nobody can cross the border for you. Coming back the other way?     What if we’re travelling with children?

    Bring each child’s own passport. South Africa’s Border Management Authority also asks travellers with children to carry written consent for minors, for example from a parent who isn’t on the trip.

  5. Arrival

    Your lodge, or the Kruger gate

    Most Kruger lodges sit outside the park itself, so we drive you to your lodge’s door. Staying inside the park? We take you through Komatipoort to Crocodile Bridge, the gate closest to Maputo, or tell us your camp and we’ll confirm how far we can take you.

    What if we reach the gate after it closes?

    If you’re staying inside the park, we won’t. Kruger’s gates close between 17:30 and 18:30 depending on the month, and latecomers aren’t let in, so we plan your departure around them.

    What if we’re driving after dark?

    Coming back to Maputo late is no problem. Our drivers are local and very experienced on these roads at night.

How far is Kruger from Maputo?

106 km to the nearest gate, 2 to 3 hours.

Kruger National Park is 106 km from Maputo by road to Crocodile Bridge, its closest gate: about 90 km west on the EN4 to the Ressano Garcia border, then through Komatipoort to the gate. The driving takes about an hour and a half; allow 2 to 3 hours door to gate, because the border is the part that varies. Malelane, the next gate west, is 141 km from Maputo.

How much is a private transfer from Maputo to Kruger?

Kruger is a big park with lodges in and all around it, so your exact fare depends on where you're staying: tell us the lodge when you message and we'll confirm a fixed price before you book. Fuel and tolls are included.
Is it a taxi, a shuttle or a private driver?
Call it whichever you like: it's a private shuttle, a taxi booked ahead and a driver for the day, all in one. The car and the driver are just for your group, nobody else gets on, you choose when to leave, and we collect you at your hotel or the airport in Maputo. It's one fixed price per car, not per seat, whichever way you're going.
How do I pay for the transfer?
In cash, or online with a payment link we send you in the WhatsApp chat. Whichever you choose, the price is the fixed fare per car we agreed, with fuel and tolls included.
How long does it take to drive from Maputo to Kruger?
Allow two to three hours from Maputo to Crocodile Bridge, the closest Kruger gate, 106 km away. The driving itself is about an hour and a half; the rest is the Ressano Garcia border, which varies. In our experience it's slower at weekends and around public holidays, and busiest over Christmas–New Year and Easter: more than 30,000 people crossed in 24 hours on Christmas Eve 2025. Lodges deeper in the park or further along the river take longer, and we'll give you the time for yours when you book.
Which border do you cross, and what do I need?
Ressano Garcia on the Mozambican side, the Lebombo border on the South African side, on the EN4 west of Maputo. Bring your passport: South Africa asks for one valid at least 30 days after you leave the country, with at least two blank pages (Department of Home Affairs). Whether you also need a visa depends on your nationality, so check before you travel, because nobody can cross the border on your behalf. Your driver handles the car's paperwork and helps you through both sides of the border.
What time does the border open, and when do the Kruger gates close?
Ressano Garcia/Lebombo has run 24 hours a day since 2022, South Africa's Border Management Authority said in April 2026, although its own port table still lists 06:00 to midnight, so check close to your date. The tighter limit is Kruger itself: SANParks closes the entrance gates between 17:30 and 18:30 depending on the month, and turns latecomers away. Can you cross into Mozambique from Kruger National Park?
Yes. From the southern gates, the main road crossing is Lebombo/Ressano Garcia, about 20 minutes from Crocodile Bridge, and Maputo is roughly an hour and a half beyond it: that's this transfer, run in reverse. Further north, the Giriyondo crossing goes straight from Kruger into Mozambique's Limpopo National Park, but it's open in daytime only, for 4x4s, and a long way from Maputo.
Is it safe to travel between Kruger and Mozambique?
It's a short, paved run on the EN4, one of the busiest corridors in the region, and our drivers do it regularly. The honest risks are queues and timing rather than the road itself: crossing late in the day is what turns an easy trip into a stressful one. We leave early enough to clear the border and reach your gate or lodge with room to spare.
Can you drop us at our lodge?
Yes. Most Kruger lodges are outside the park itself, in the towns and private reserves around it, and we drive you to the door. If you're staying inside the park, some camps have their own access rules or need a park entry fee for the vehicle, so send us the name when you message and we'll confirm exactly where we can take you and what it costs before you book.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car — not a 4x4 — carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing camera gear or a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Is the transfer car a 4x4? My lodge says I need one.
Our standard transfer cars aren't 4x4s — so if your lodge sits at the end of a sand or rough access track, you must tell us when you book. We do have 4x4s and will happily arrange one, but we don't run the lodges, so we can't know what each access road requires. Check with your accommodation, tell us on WhatsApp, and we'll send the right vehicle.
Do you also drive to the airports on the South African side?
Yes — the same private, door-to-door service to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport ($285), Nelspruit ($285) and OR Tambo in Johannesburg ($470). If you're flying home out of South Africa after your park stay, tell us which airport and your flight time and we'll build the drive around it.
