The route

How to get from Maputo to Kruger.

The drive from Maputo to Kruger is short by Mozambican standards — roughly 110 km east on the EN4 to the Ressano Garcia border, then on through Komatipoort to Crocodile Bridge, the closest Kruger gate to Maputo. Allow two to three hours door to gate. The driving is barely ninety minutes of that; the rest is the border, which is why nobody who has done it quotes you a single tidy number.

It runs the same in reverse. Kruger to Maputo is the identical private, door-to-door service for the same $235 — the usual reason being a flight out of Maputo, or the start of a Mozambican leg after a few days in the park.

The part everyone asks about

Crossing at Ressano Garcia.

The Ressano Garcia border post is the main road crossing between Mozambique and South Africa, known as Lebombo on the South African side and sitting on the EN4 about an hour east of Maputo. It is the busiest land border either country operates, and it is the single thing that decides whether your drive to Kruger is easy or long.

Timing is the whole trick. The crossing is not open around the clock for most of the year, extending to 24 hours only over the Easter and mid-December to mid-January peaks — and hours are adjusted from time to time, so confirm them with South Africa’s Border Management Authority close to your date. What we do about it is simple: we set your departure so you reach the post well inside its hours, with margin for a queue, rather than arriving hopeful at the back end of the day.

You’ll need your passport, and a South African visa if your nationality requires one — that part is yours to check and ours to plan around, because no operator can cross a border on your behalf. Your driver deals with the vehicle paperwork on both sides, which is the part that catches out self-drivers in a hired car.

Is it safe? The road itself is paved, busy and unremarkable, and our drivers run it regularly. The genuine risk on this route is a late crossing, not the driving — which is exactly why we plan the day around the border instead of around the odometer.

How long does it take to drive from Maputo to Kruger?
Plan on two to three hours to the Crocodile Bridge gate, the closest Kruger entrance to Maputo. The driving itself is short — around 110 km — but the Ressano Garcia border crossing is the part that varies, and a busy morning can add an hour on its own. We build the border into the timing rather than pretending it isn't there.
Which border do you cross, and what do I need?
Ressano Garcia on the Mozambican side, Lebombo on the South African side — the main crossing between the two countries, on the EN4 east of Maputo. Bring your passport and, if you need one for South Africa, a valid visa; check your own nationality's requirements before you travel, because we can't cross the border on your behalf. Your driver handles the vehicle paperwork.
What time does the border open?
The Ressano Garcia/Lebombo crossing is not open around the clock for most of the year — it runs on set daytime hours, and extends to 24 hours over the Easter and mid-December to mid-January peaks. Hours do change, so confirm them with South Africa's Border Management Authority close to your travel date. In practice we plan your departure to hit the border well inside its opening hours, with margin.
Is it safe to drive from Maputo to Kruger?
It's a short, paved run on the EN4, one of the busiest corridors in the region, and our drivers do it regularly. The honest risks are queues and timing rather than the road itself: crossing late in the day is what turns an easy trip into a stressful one. We leave early enough to clear the border with room to spare, and you're in a private car with a driver who has done the crossing many times before.
Can you drop us at our lodge inside the park?
Tell us the lodge and we'll tell you honestly. Many lodges sit outside the park gates or in the private reserves nearby and are a straightforward drop; some inside Kruger have their own access rules or require a park entry fee for the vehicle. Send us the name when you message and we'll confirm exactly where we can take you and what it costs before you book.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car — not a 4x4 — carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing camera gear or a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Is the transfer car a 4x4? My lodge says I need one.
Our standard transfer cars aren't 4x4s — so if your lodge sits at the end of a sand or rough access track, you must tell us when you book. We do have 4x4s and will happily arrange one, but we don't run the lodges, so we can't know what each access road requires. Check with your accommodation, tell us on WhatsApp, and we'll send the right vehicle.
Do you also drive to the airports on the South African side?
Yes — the same private, door-to-door service to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport ($285), Nelspruit ($285) and OR Tambo in Johannesburg ($470). If you're flying home out of South Africa after your park stay, tell us which airport and your flight time and we'll build the drive around it.
