Humpback whale and her calf off Praia do Tofo, Mozambique

Praia do Tofo · Inhambane · Mozambique

Humpback whales
in Tofo.

Overview

The migration passes right here.

A humpback whale ocean safari in Tofo is a guided small-boat trip out to meet the migrating humpbacks — 40-tonne animals that breach clear of the water as they pass close to the Inhambane coast through the Mozambique Channel. They come here to breed, not to feed, and the warm, sheltered water is where mothers coach their calves to breach and tail-slap. A newborn calf can put on around 50 kg a day on its mother's rich milk, and many of these whales return to breed in the same waters where they were born — the humpbacks off Tofo really are local. Season runs June to November, best August to October.

These are the same humpback whales that pass Vilanculos and Bazaruto. Tofo gives you a shorter ocean-safari format: less of a full-day island program, more of a focused marine wildlife window.

You watch from a stable boat the whole time, keeping the respectful distance the guides brief you on — but humpbacks are curious, and a relaxed one will often close the gap itself, surfacing right beside the boat to take a look at you. Sightings are never guaranteed, but in peak months the hit rate is high — and even on quiet days you can still see dolphins, rays, or turtles on the same route.

Questions we get

Before you book.

When is humpback whale season in Tofo?
June through November. Peak is usually August to October, when sightings are most consistent and calves are often seen close to shore. For the full picture — where and when to see whales across Mozambique — see our whale watching guide.
Is this different from whale watching in Vilanculos?
Yes. Vilanculos whale watching is a full-day Bazaruto program. Tofo's version is a shorter ocean safari focused on the migration corridor off Inhambane.
Can I combine humpback whales and whale sharks in Tofo?
In season, yes. Whale sharks are seen year-round in Tofo, and humpbacks pass June–November. We'll structure the days around sea conditions and recent sightings.
How close do you get to humpback whales?
Closer than you'd expect — but always on the whales' terms. We follow local marine guidance, keep a respectful distance, and never chase a pod. Humpbacks are naturally curious, though, and a relaxed one will often approach the boat itself to take a look at you. When that happens the skipper holds the boat steady with the engines neutral and lets the whale set the pace.
Is this good for children?
Yes for kids who are comfortable on small boats. Conditions vary by day, so we always advise families honestly before confirming.
Can I do this as a day trip from Vilanculos?
Not realistically. Tofo is about 5 hours south of Vilanculos by road, so this works best as part of a multi-day route.
