Overview
The migration passes right here.
A humpback whale ocean safari in Tofo is a guided small-boat trip out to meet the migrating humpbacks — 40-tonne animals that breach clear of the water as they pass close to the Inhambane coast through the Mozambique Channel. They come here to breed, not to feed, and the warm, sheltered water is where mothers coach their calves to breach and tail-slap. A newborn calf can put on around 50 kg a day on its mother's rich milk, and many of these whales return to breed in the same waters where they were born — the humpbacks off Tofo really are local. Season runs June to November, best August to October.
These are the same humpback whales that pass Vilanculos and Bazaruto. Tofo gives you a shorter ocean-safari format: less of a full-day island program, more of a focused marine wildlife window.
You watch from a stable boat the whole time, keeping the respectful distance the guides brief you on — but humpbacks are curious, and a relaxed one will often close the gap itself, surfacing right beside the boat to take a look at you. Sightings are never guaranteed, but in peak months the hit rate is high — and even on quiet days you can still see dolphins, rays, or turtles on the same route.
