Flights to Mozambique — Routes, Airlines, and What Actually Works (2026)
A practical guide to flights to Mozambique in 2026: which airlines fly to Maputo, Vilanculos, Pemba, and Inhambane; international routes from the US, UK, Europe, and South Africa; and an honest take on LAM Mozambique Airlines.
On this page
Flights to Mozambique all route through one of three hubs: Lisbon (TAP), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian), Doha (Qatar), or Johannesburg (Airlink, SAA, others). There are no nonstop flights from the US or UK. Inside the country, LAM Mozambique Airlines and South African operator Airlink cover Maputo, Vilanculos, Pemba, Inhambane, Beira, and the smaller airports. This is the practical version of how flights to Mozambique actually work in 2026 — routes, airlines, transit times, and what to watch out for.

The airports
Mozambique’s main airports, north to south:
| Airport | Code | Province | Mostly used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pemba | POL | Cabo Delgado | Quirimbas Archipelago, far north |
| Nampula | APL | Nampula | Ilha de Moçambique, central north |
| Tete | TET | Tete | Inland, mining region |
| Beira | BEW | Sofala | Gorongosa National Park |
| Vilanculos | VNX | Inhambane | Bazaruto Archipelago, our base |
| Inhambane | INH | Inhambane | Tofo, Barra |
| Maputo | MPM | Maputo | International hub, capital |
Maputo (MPM) handles the international long-haul; the others are mostly LAM and Airlink. (Wikipedia: List of airports in Mozambique)
How to get to Mozambique — by region
From the United States
No direct flights. The fastest options:
- JFK or IAD → Doha → Maputo (Qatar Airways). One-stop, ~22 hours total.
- JFK or ATL → Addis Ababa → Maputo (Ethiopian Airlines). One-stop, ~22 hours.
- JFK → London → Johannesburg → Maputo (BA + Airlink/SAA). Two-stop, ~24 hours.
Most US travellers we see fly via Doha (Qatar’s product is good and the schedule works) or via Johannesburg if they want to combine with a South African safari.
From the United Kingdom and Ireland
- LHR → Lisbon → Maputo (TAP Air Portugal). One-stop, ~14 hours, often the cheapest.
- LHR → Doha → Maputo (Qatar Airways). One-stop, ~16 hours.
- LHR → Johannesburg → Maputo (BA/Virgin + Airlink). One-stop or two-stop, ~16–18 hours. (Qatar Airways: Flights to Maputo)
From mainland Europe
- Lisbon → Maputo direct on TAP Air Portugal, daily. The shortest route from Europe.
- Most other European cities route via Lisbon, Doha, or Addis. KLM and Lufthansa have at times operated direct or one-stop options to Maputo; check current schedules.
From the Middle East and Asia
- Qatar Airways is currently the only direct from the Middle East — Doha → Maputo year-round. (Travel and Tour World: Mozambique aviation)
- Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa connects most of Asia.
- Emirates (DXB → Maputo) operates via Lusaka or other hubs depending on the season.
From other African countries
The fastest international gateway is Johannesburg (JNB) — multiple daily flights with Airlink and South African Airways, ~50 minutes flight time.
Direct flights also operate from:
- Nairobi (NBO) — Kenya Airways
- Addis Ababa (ADD) — Ethiopian Airlines
- Luanda (LAD) — TAAG Angola
- Kigali (KGL) — RwandAir
- Dar es Salaam (DAR) — irregular, check current schedules
Internal flights — LAM and Airlink
Once you’re in Mozambique, two carriers cover the country.
LAM Mozambique Airlines
The national carrier. Hub at Maputo. Serves Vilanculos, Inhambane, Beira, Tete, Quelimane, Nampula, Pemba, and Lichinga, plus regional routes to Johannesburg, Lisbon, and selected African cities.
The honest version: LAM has improved. The decade of 2010–2020 was rough — cancellations, schedule slippage, occasional safety questions — but operations have stabilised since 2023. The fleet is mostly modern Embraer 190s. Most flights run on time. Book in advance, build a buffer if you have a tight international connection, and don’t book the last flight of the day if a missed connection would be a disaster.
Airlink
A South African regional carrier with a strong Mozambique network. Johannesburg → Maputo, Vilanculos, Pemba, Beira, Tete, Nampula — multiple daily on the main routes. Often the easiest way for international travellers to reach Vilanculos or Pemba directly (no Maputo stopover).
Airlink is the more conservative choice — slightly higher fares, more reliable scheduling, codeshare with most international carriers including Qatar, BA, and Lufthansa. (Airlink)
Getting to Vilanculos specifically
Most of our guests come to Vilanculos (VNX) for the Bazaruto Archipelago. Three real ways in:
- Fly direct from Johannesburg. Airlink runs JNB → VNX most days. ~1.5 hours flight. The fastest international connection.
- Fly via Maputo. Both LAM and Airlink run MPM → VNX, ~1.5 hours. Combine with a Maputo culture day.
- Drive from Maputo. ~10–12 hours on the paved EN1. Most international travellers don’t do this; some South African self-drivers do. See our self-drive guide.
Don’t try to “drive from Tofo to Vilanculos” as a separate flight day — there’s no commercial flight between Inhambane (INH) and Vilanculos (VNX), and the drive is 5 hours. Plan the trip with the drive built in. See our 10-day itinerary for the standard sequence.
Getting to the Quirimbas
Different territory. Pemba (POL) is the only realistic international gateway, served by:
- Maputo → Pemba on LAM, daily.
- Johannesburg → Pemba on Airlink, several times a week.
From Pemba, your lodge will arrange a small-aircraft transfer (Vamizi, Medjumbe, Quilálea — usually included in the lodge rate) or a boat transfer (Ibo Island).
Yellow fever, visa, and what immigration checks at the airport
The airline checks your visa or ETA before boarding — that’s where most travellers get stopped, not at Mozambican immigration. The current rules:
- ETA online for the 29-country bucket (US, UK, Canada, EU, etc.). Apply at evisa.gov.mz at least a week before flying.
- e-Visa online for everyone else.
- Yellow fever certificate if you’ve been in or transited through a yellow-fever-endemic country.
Read our full visa guide before you book the flight.
What to know at Maputo Airport
- Arrivals. Immigration is straightforward if your paperwork is in order. Have ETA or e-visa printed on paper. Customs is light.
- Departures. Allow 2 hours for the international departure. The airport is small and runs efficiently.
- Lounges. Limited. Both Qatar and Ethiopian have business lounges; the international airline-shared lounge is OK.
- Connections to domestic. All in the same terminal — easy to connect MPM international arrival to a Vilanculos LAM/Airlink flight if your inbound is on time.
What to know at Vilanculos Airport (VNX)
- Tiny. One small terminal. Walk to the plane.
- Transfers. Most lodges arrange airport transfers (free or modest fee). If we’re picking you up, we’ll be at arrivals.
- No lounge, no shopping, no ATM beyond a snack bar. Bring water and patience.
- Departures. Show up an hour before; the small turboprops board quickly.

Send us your origin and dates and we’ll suggest the routing — sometimes the cheapest route isn’t the best one (a 4-hour layover in Lisbon beats a 1-hour scramble in Johannesburg). WhatsApp us and we’ll point you at what works.
