Base camp — the beach road, the harbour, the market, and most of the lodges.
Daily flights from Johannesburg, plus Maputo four days a week. We meet arrivals — private transfers from $25 (1,500 MT).
The giant of the archipelago — 37 km of dunes and beaches. Our day trips land at Ponta Dondo, the towering dune at its southern tip.
The second island of the big day trip — beach lunch, and a slow walk to the crab beach.
The closest island to town, with a calm, shallow lagoon — the family favourite.
The only true rock island in the archipelago — reef straight off the beach, and the 1950s hotel ruins.
The signature snorkel and dive reef of the archipelago, between Bazaruto and Benguerra.
Rust-red dunes meeting the ocean north of town. Our late-afternoon trip climbs them for sunset.
Five km south of town — the earliest-known trading port in southern Africa, where glass beads came ashore from around the 10th century. On UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list.
A dry-stone enclosure in the Great Zimbabwe tradition, about 50 km inland — lived in from around 1200 to 1700 and fed by the trade that came ashore at Chibuene.
Flat, shallow, and wind-blessed — kitesurfing from August to October, sunset dhows on calm evenings.
Five islands inside a 1,430 km² national park managed with African Parks — the clearest water in the country and the postcard everyone comes for.

On the map

Whitewashed Portuguese streets, the old governor's palace, the daily market and long lunches on the bay — the historic core fits inside ten blocks.
The old Portuguese cathedral near the jetty, with its clocktower, facing the modern 1974 cathedral across the street — a stop on the old-town walk.
Across Inhambane Bay — about 30 minutes under sail on the traditional dhow ferry locals use every day.
Served by LAM from Maputo (~50 min) and Vilanculos (~45 min) — 7 km from the city, 22 km from Tofo. We arrange pickups.
22 km east on the open Indian Ocean — whale sharks, the country's most reliable surf, and the province's most famous beach.
The quieter, bay-facing northern tip of the peninsula — flat calm water, family lodges, and the Ponta da Barra lighthouse.
The rocky headland 1–2 km south — Mozambique's most famous right-hand point break, and the best land vantage on the humpback corridor.

Maputo

The best food on the coast, a grand colonial railway station, Africa's longest bridge, and piri-piri markets — plus where to stay, when to go, and is it safe.

The walkable downtown grid — the cathedral, the Tunduru Botanical Gardens, the Praça da Independência and the Casa do Ferro, a loose half-day on foot.
A turn-of-the-century landmark with a copper dome and wrought-iron verandas — its grand concourse doubles as a live-jazz venue.
The city's belly — fish from the bay, piri-piri, spices, capulanas and baskets under one roof. Best in the morning.
The craft, flower and food market in Parque dos Continuadores — stalls of carvings and capulanas, and open-air kitchens to eat at between them.
Across the bay over the Maputo–Catembe Bridge (2018, about 3 km) — seafood by the kilo and the whole skyline at sunset.
Up the Marginal north of the centre, where the city meets the beach — seafood restaurants along the shore and sea air.
The country's main gateway, 6 km from the centre — direct flights from Johannesburg (~1h). We arrange pickups.
A boat ride off the coast — reefs, beaches and a marine reserve. A full day out of town.
The former Maputo Special Reserve, south of the city — elephants and a wild stretch of coast. A full day out.
The capital and main international gateway — Portuguese architecture, a serious food scene, and the airport most long-haul trips arrive through.

The far-south beach town near the South African border — resident dolphins and a natural-shark dive site divers cross continents for.
The country's flagship land park — a famous post-war wildlife restoration in the centre of the country. A separate trip, not a coastal add-on.
A UNESCO World Heritage island city — the old Portuguese capital, reached from Nampula in the north.
The far-north hub on one of the world's largest natural bays — the jumping-off point for the Quirimbas. Check current advisories for Cabo Delgado province.
Thirty-plus islands running toward Tanzania — remote, fly-in, and home to some of the most exclusive lodges in Africa.
Capital of Gaza Province, 206 km from Maputo by road.
Capital of Sofala Province, on the coast.
Capital of Manica Province, 702 m above sea level.
