Santa Carolina Island, Mozambique — an empty white-sand bar at sunset

Your honeymoon, in Mozambique.

Bazaruto sandbars, dhow sunsets, the coast that isn't on every honeymoon's Instagram.

A locally-run honeymoon along the southern Mozambican coast — private islands you can have to yourselves, world-class marine wildlife, and the same exclusivity as Mauritius or Seychelles at 30–60% less. We plan it from here, with the people who actually live on this water.

A Mozambique honeymoon is a barefoot-luxury beach trip along southern Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast — usually 7–14 nights built around the Bazaruto Archipelago’s private islands, with sunset dhow sails, empty sandbar lunches, and year-round whale-shark snorkelling at Tofo if you add a few nights south. It costs noticeably less than the Mauritius or Seychelles equivalent, and the beach you’ll come home with photos of isn’t on every other honeymoon’s feed.

Why come here

The honeymoon that feels rare.

The Bazaruto Archipelago — five islands inside a national park since 1971, shared between a handful of lodges. The sandbar you walk at sunset is yours alone.

Dugongs still drift through the seagrass channel between Bazaruto and Benguerra — one of the last viable populations on Earth.

No resort wall, no buffet queue, no ten other couples on your beach. The day is yours and so is the pace.

The luxury tier costs 30–60% less than the Mauritius or Seychelles equivalent — the saving buys you an extra week, an upgraded suite, or the Kruger safari before.

And the combo that’s hard to beat for a honeymoon: a few nights on safari in South Africa, then straight to the Bazaruto islands. Big Five mornings, sandbar afternoons. We plan the Mozambique half end-to-end and coordinate the safari leg with you.

The trip in moments

What you’d actually do.

On the water

A private dhow at sunset.

Just the two of you, the wind, and the bay turning gold. A bottle of South African MCC if you want one. No engine, no other boats nearby.

On the sand

Lunch on a sandbar.

A table laid on a white-sand bank that’s under water at high tide and yours at low. Fresh seafood cooked on the boat, brought ashore. No-one else in the photo.

In the water

Snorkel with whale sharks.

Year-round at Tofo, two hours south — one of the most reliable whale-shark spots on Earth. Snorkel-and-go, no scuba needed.

In season

Humpback whales close to the boat.

June to November, peak August–October when the calves come past. Watchable from both Vilanculos and Tofo.

On land

The red dunes at golden hour.

Sail across the bay by dhow or drive out, climb the red dunes barefoot, and watch the sun set over the sea and the islands. Sundowners at the top, back under the stars.

Back on shore

Dinner the way locals cook it.

Matapa, piri-piri prawns, peixe grelhado, xima — the Mozambican kitchen, cooked properly. Some lodges run a private chef on the beach if you want it.

How it usually shapes up

Three honeymoons we’d plan.

Starting shapes — not packages. Tell us your dates and your idea of the trip, and we’ll write you a custom honeymoon itinerary within 24 hours: named lodges, day-by-day, transfers, honest price. Built for the two of you, not pulled off a shelf.

7 nights · Pure Bazaruto

The classic.

Fly in to Vilanculos, transfer to a Bazaruto or Benguerra island lodge for 7 nights. Days drift — sandbar lunches, dhow sunsets, the dugong channel, the dune sunsets. No itinerary pressure.

Best for: couples who want one place, no logistics, total switch-off.

10 nights · Bazaruto + Tofo

Two coasts.

5 nights on a Bazaruto island for the barefoot-luxury half, then a short flight to Tofo for 4 nights of whale sharks, surf, and small-village rhythm. The contrast is the point.

Best for: couples who want exclusivity and marine wildlife; divers; one of you wants polish, the other wants real.

14 nights · Kruger + Bazaruto

Safari and beach.

4 nights in a private safari reserve in South Africa (Sabi Sand or similar) for the Big Five, then fly via Johannesburg to Vilanculos for 8–9 nights on a Bazaruto island. The honeymoon of the year, done right.

Best for: couples who want both halves of the southern Africa dream, with the time to do them properly.

Some couples want both islands, some want a Kruger leg plus diving in Tofo, some want 5 nights of total quiet. Whatever shape you’re picturing — we’ll draft it.

Where you’d stay

Lodge tiers, honestly described.

Ultra-luxury

$1,000–$4,000 / person / night

Kisawa Sanctuary (Benguerra) is Mozambique’s most luxurious lodge — ocean-facing villas, private chef, the country’s top food. &Beyond Benguerra Island sits in the same tier with the &Beyond conservation pedigree. For couples who want the no-compromises top.

Mid-luxury

$200–$400 / person / night

Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel, Casa Cabana, Aguia Negra — based in Vilanculos itself, with private day trips out to the islands. Less polish than the island lodges; more flexibility, lower price, longer trip possible. A real option for couples who don’t want all-inclusive resort life.

Prices are per person per night including most activities. Flights and Vilanculos transfer add separately. We have no commercial tie to any lodge — we recommend what matches your trip.

When to come

The honest seasonal picture.

  • April & Novemberthe shoulders. Lovely weather, lower prices, fewer people. Smart honeymoon timing if your dates aren’t fixed.
  • May, June, Julypeak dry season. Reliable sunshine, calm seas, lower humidity. Humpback season starts.
  • August, September, Octoberpeak peak. The humpback whale calves come through, the snorkelling is clearest, the lodges fill up. Book 4–6 months ahead.
  • December & Januaryhot and beautiful. Higher humidity, occasional rain, occasional cyclone watch. Christmas / New Year rates apply; book early.
  • February & Marchthe lull. Hottest, most humid, cyclone risk highest. Some lodges close or restrict service. Not the honeymoon window.

Common questions

Still on your mind.

Why is Mozambique good for a honeymoon?
Three reasons. Exclusivity — the Bazaruto Archipelago has been a national park since 1971 and is shared between a handful of small luxury lodges; you can spend an afternoon on a sandbar and see no one else. Marine wildlife — whale sharks year-round, dugongs in the Bazaruto seagrass, humpback whales June–November, manta rays. Value at the top tier — equivalent private-island luxury costs 30–60% less than Mauritius or Seychelles. The trip feels rare in a way most tropical honeymoons don't.
How long should a Mozambique honeymoon be?
7–10 days is the sweet spot. Seven nights at a Bazaruto / Benguerra lodge, or split between a Vilanculos island stay and a few nights in Tofo for whale sharks. 14 days opens up combinations — Vilanculos + Tofo, or a Kruger safari add-on before / after. Anything under 5 nights and you spend too much of the holiday in transit; anything over 14 and you'll want to add a second region or stop.
Where should we stay for a Mozambique honeymoon?
The Bazaruto Archipelago is the honeymoon answer for most couples — private islands, world-class lodges, empty beaches. Top tier: Anantara Bazaruto, Azura Benguerra, Kisawa Sanctuary (the country's most luxurious), &Beyond Benguerra Island. Mid-luxury options exist in Vilanculos itself (Bahia Mar, Casa Cabana) with day trips to the islands. Tofo works if diving or whale-shark snorkeling matters more than barefoot-luxury — less polished, more about the ocean.
How much does a Mozambique honeymoon cost?
Wide range. Top-tier private island lodge (Anantara, Azura, &Beyond, Kisawa): $400–$1,500 per person per night all-inclusive. A 7-night stay for two: $5,500–$20,000+. Mid-luxury (Bahia Mar, Casa Cabana, Aguia Negra with private day trips to Bazaruto): $200–$400 per person per night including activities. A 7-night package: $2,800–$5,500 for two. Flights from Europe add $1,500–$3,000 per person; from South Africa $400–$800. We'll quote your exact dates — honest pricing, no markup games.
When is the best time for a Mozambique honeymoon?
April to October is the dry season — reliable sunshine, calm seas, comfortable humidity. July to October is peak honeymoon season (also humpback whale season). August–October sees the calves; the most active whale watching. November and April are the shoulders — lovely weather, lower prices, fewer people. December–March is hotter and more humid with occasional cyclone risk; some lodges close. Book the top-tier lodges 4–6 months ahead for peak season.
Is Bazaruto Island better than Benguerra Island for a honeymoon?
Different. Bazaruto is the larger island, the higher dunes, and home to Anantara Bazaruto and Kisawa. Benguerra is smaller, has the calmer feel, and home to &Beyond Benguerra and Azura. Both inside Bazaruto National Park. Honeymooners who want sense-of-place pick Benguerra; couples who want the biggest landscape pick Bazaruto. Honest answer: either is incredible — the lodge choice matters more than the island choice. See our Bazaruto Archipelago guide.
Can we combine the honeymoon with a safari?
Yes — this is the most popular pairing. Standard shape: 3–4 nights in Kruger (or Sabi Sand / private reserve in South Africa) for the Big Five, then a short flight via Johannesburg to Vilanculos for 5–7 nights on the Bazaruto islands. Two-week total. Many top-tier safari lodges and Bazaruto lodges have referral relationships; we coordinate from our end. See our 2-week Mozambique itinerary for a sample shape, and our visa & entry guide for what each of you needs at the Mozambique border.
How do we book a Mozambique honeymoon?
Tell us your dates, the rough budget tier (mid-luxury / luxury / ultra-luxury), and whether you're combining with a safari. We'll send a draft route within 24 hours, with named lodges, day-by-day activities, transfers, and an honest price. No deposit to start the conversation. Message us on WhatsApp or use the form at the bottom.
Is Mozambique safe for a honeymoon?
Yes. The southern coast (Maputo, Inhambane, Tofo, Vilanculos, the Bazaruto Archipelago) is safe with normal precautions and at the same US State Department advisory level as France (Level 2). The Cabo Delgado conflict in the far north is more than 2,000 km from any honeymoon itinerary — further than London is from Madrid. See our full safety guide for the city-by-city picture.
Mozambique honeymoon vs Mauritius vs Seychelles — how does it compare?
Different vibes for different priorities. We've written full comparisons: Mozambique or Mauritius (Mauritius is polished and predictable; Mozambique is exclusive and 40–60% cheaper at luxury tier), Mozambique or Seychelles (Seychelles has the granite-island brand; Mozambique delivers the same private-island feeling for 30–50% less), Mozambique or Zanzibar (Zanzibar is easier and cheaper on the floor; Mozambique is rarer and quieter).
