How far Ponta do Ouro is from Maputo.

Ponta do Ouro is about 121 km south of Maputo, and the drive takes roughly an hour and fifty minutes door to door. The route crosses the Maputo–Katembe bridge out of the city and runs south on tar the whole way to the village — which is the detail most old advice still gets wrong. This journey was once a slow sand-track crossing that genuinely required a 4x4 and half a day; the bridge and the paved road changed that, and a standard car now does it comfortably.

Sand hasn’t disappeared entirely, it has just moved to the end. The streets around the village and many lodge access tracks are still soft, so whether you need a 4x4 depends on where you sleep rather than how you get there — tell us the lodge and we’ll send the right vehicle.

Maputo National Park sits on the same road, roughly 68 km and fifty minutes from the city, with elephants and wetlands running down toward the coast. Its interior tracks are sand and require a 4x4, so if you’d like to stop, tell us when you book and we’ll plan the vehicle and the day around it.

It runs the same in reverse. Ponta do Ouro to Maputo is the identical private, door-to-door service for the same $125 — most often booked for the return to the airport at the end of a stay.

We allow a little over the raw driving time for the bridge and the town end of Maputo.
Do I need a 4x4 to get to Ponta do Ouro?
Not for the drive itself. The road from Maputo to Ponta do Ouro village is tarred, and our standard car does it comfortably. What's still sandy is the last bit — the streets around the village and many of the lodge access tracks. If your accommodation sits down one of those, tell us when you book and we'll arrange a 4x4 for the drop; we don't run the lodges, so we can't know which access roads need one.
Can you drop us at Ponta Malongane instead?
Yes. Ponta Malongane is a short run further up the coast from Ponta do Ouro and we drive there on the same transfer — same car, same driver, same door-to-door service. Tell us which of the two you're staying at, and the lodge name, and we'll confirm the fare before you book.
Do you cross the South African border at Kosi Bay?
This transfer runs entirely inside Mozambique — Maputo down to Ponta do Ouro, no border. Ponta do Ouro sits close to the Kosi Bay crossing into South Africa, which is why many South African visitors arrive from that side instead, but our route comes down from Maputo. If you need the border run itself, we drive Durban to Maputo through Kosi Bay and Ponta do Ouro — and can drop you in Ponta on the way.
What is there to do in Ponta do Ouro?
Ponta do Ouro is southern Mozambique's diving and dolphin town — a wide bay at the very bottom of the country, known for its reefs, its resident bottlenose dolphins, and the humpback whales that pass offshore in season. We're the drive rather than the dive shop, so book activities with your lodge or a local operator; we'll simply get you there and collect you when you're done.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car — not a 4x4 — carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing dive gear, boards or a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Do you run Ponta do Ouro back to Maputo as well?
Yes — exactly the same private, door-to-door service in the other direction, at the same $125. Plenty of people book it for the return to Maputo airport at the end of a stay. Tell us which way you're going, your pickup point and your flight time if there is one, and we'll build the drive around it.
Does the drive pass Maputo National Park?
It runs right by it. Maputo National Park sits about 68 km south of the city on the same paved road, roughly 50 minutes out — elephants, wetlands and a coastline that runs down towards Ponta do Ouro. Entering the park itself needs a 4x4 because the tracks inside are sand, so if you'd like to stop or spend time there, say so when you book and we'll plan the day and the vehicle around it.
