Ponta do Ouro is about 121 km south of Maputo by road, about 2 hours door to door. The road crosses the Maputo–Katembe bridge and runs south on tar the whole way to the village, past Maputo National Park. A standard car does it comfortably; only the sandy village streets and some lodge tracks need a 4x4.

Ponta do Ouro is southern Mozambique’s diving and dolphin town, a wide bay at the very bottom of the country, known for its reefs, its bottlenose dolphins and the humpback whales that pass offshore in season.

How far is Ponta do Ouro from Maputo, and how long is the drive?
Ponta do Ouro is about 121 km south of Maputo by road, about 2 hours door to door. The road crosses the Maputo–Katembe bridge and runs south on tar the whole way to the village. This drive used to be a long sand-track trip; the bridge and the paved road changed that.
Do I need a 4x4 to get to Ponta do Ouro?
Not for the drive itself: the road to the village is tarred, and our standard car does it comfortably. What's still sandy is the end, the streets around the village and many lodge access tracks. If your accommodation sits down one of those, tell us when you book and we'll arrange a 4x4 for the drop.
Can you drop us at Ponta Malongane instead?
Yes, on request. Ponta Malongane is a short way up the coast from Ponta do Ouro, but the last stretch is a sand track, and that usually means a 4x4. Tell us your lodge when you message, and we'll check the access and confirm the vehicle and the fare before you book.
Do you run Ponta do Ouro to Maputo as well?
Yes, exactly the same private, door-to-door service in the other direction, at the same $125. Plenty of people book it for the return to Maputo airport at the end of a stay: tell us your flight time and we'll plan the drive around it.
Can you collect us from Maputo airport?
Yes, at the same $125. We meet your flight at Maputo airport (MPM) with your name on a sign and drive straight down to Ponta. Send us your flight number and we'll track it.
Do you cross the South African border at Kosi Bay?
This transfer runs entirely inside Mozambique, Maputo down to Ponta do Ouro, with no border. If you need the border run itself, we drive Maputo to Durban through Ponta do Ouro and Kosi Bay, and can stop in Ponta on the way.
Does the drive pass Maputo National Park?
It runs right by it. Maputo National Park sits about 68 km south of the city on the same road, roughly 50 minutes out. Inside the park the tracks are sand and need a 4x4, so if you'd like to stop there, say so when you book and we'll plan the day and the vehicle around it.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car (not a 4x4) carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing dive gear, boards or a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Is it dangerous to drive at night in Mozambique?
We wouldn't recommend tourists driving themselves at night: the roads are unfamiliar, lighting is limited, and animals and pedestrians share the roadside after dark. Our drivers are local and very experienced with night driving, so they know the roads and the conditions, so a late flight or an early start is no problem. And if part of your trip is self-drive, we can put a driver on that stretch too.
