Calm shallow lagoon at Magaruque Island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Mozambique with kids.

Calm water. Short island days. A holiday that works for them and for you.

Mozambique is one of the easiest beach countries in Africa to travel with kids — warm, welcoming, and built around shallow, sheltered water. For families we base you in Vilanculos, the gateway to the Bazaruto islands.

Family holidays in Mozambique

An easy coast
to bring kids to.

Mozambique isn’t a built-up resort strip — it’s a warm, relaxed coast where kids are welcome everywhere and the sea does most of the entertaining. We’re a local operator based in Vilanculos, and for families that’s where we’d start you: a shallow, sheltered bay, short island crossings, and days that flex around nap times and attention spans without anyone feeling short-changed.

Below: what to do by your kids’ age, the honest safety picture, what it costs, and how to plan it. For the wider picture, see the Mozambique travel guide or the things to do in Vilanculos.

By your kids’ age

The right day
for the right age.

Toddlers & under-5s

The bay does the work. You want shallow, calm water and short days.

Keep boat days short and the crossing calm. Magaruque is the one we point families with little ones toward first.

What to actually do

The days kids
remember.

A calm day on Magaruque

The island we recommend first for families. A short crossing, a shallow lagoon that stays calm when the open channel is rough, and snorkeling straight off the beach in water you can stand up in. Beach lunch cooked on the sand.

Bazaruto & Benguerra for older kids

The flagship island day, best for kids who can already swim and snorkel. The big white dunes, Two Mile Reef, and a good chance of dolphins (and sometimes a dugong) in the channel between the islands.

Horse riding on the beach

A gentle walk along the shore at low tide — calm horses, a guide leading the little ones. One of those things kids talk about for the rest of the trip.

A market morning

The central market is a whole sensory day out for a small human — fish landing on the sand at dawn, stacks of bright capulanas, cashews and mangoes to taste. Best early, before the heat sets in.

A hands-on cooking lesson

Kids tend to love this more than the adults do. Three Mozambican dishes, hands in the pot, and lunch is whatever they cook. A good rainy-afternoon or rest-day option between island days.

A short sunset dhow sail

A traditional wooden sailing boat, an hour on flat evening water, the sky going gold. Easy on small kids if you keep it short, and the calmest way to end a beach day.

What it costs for kids

Kids under 10
pay half.

On our island day trips, children under 10 pay 50% off the adult price — $55 instead of $110 for Magaruque, $60 instead of $120 for Bazaruto & Benguerra. Lunch, snorkel gear, life jackets, and park fees are included for everyone.

Travelling as a family or a group and want the boat to yourselves? We run private charters — tell us your ages and dates and we’ll quote it.

The honest safety picture

Is Mozambique safe for families?

Malaria
Mozambique's coast, including Vilanculos, is in a malaria zone — a real risk, not a theoretical one. Talk to a travel doctor well before you fly about antimalarials for children and the best repellent for young skin. Cover up at dusk and use a net if your room doesn't have screens. Full detail in our Mozambique health guide.
Water & food
Stick to bottled or filtered water for the whole family, and skip ice at smaller spots. Most lodges and restaurants use filtered water. The food is easy on kids — grilled fish, rice, chicken, fruit — and our island lunches always have plain options.
On the boat
Life jackets are provided and worn, the crossings are short, and our skippers won't run a trip in rough conditions. Magaruque's lagoon is shallow and sheltered, which is exactly why it's the one we steer families with little ones toward.
Medical & insurance
Vilanculos has a local hospital and a couple of private clinics for the everyday stuff — stitches, stomach bugs, fevers. For anything serious, the standard is evacuation to Maputo or Johannesburg. So with kids especially: travel insurance with medical-evacuation cover is non-negotiable.
Sun & heat
The sun here is strong. Reef-safe sunscreen, hats, rash vests for the water, and shade in the middle of the day. We carry plenty of cold drinking water on every trip so nobody dehydrates.
The vibe
Mozambique is a warm, family-oriented place — kids are welcome everywhere, and Mozambicans dote on children. The southern coast where we operate is stable and low-stress to travel as a family, which is half the reason people come back.

Planning a family trip

Good to know before you book.

Where to base a family
For families we base you in Vilanculos — the calm, shallow bay and the gateway to the Bazaruto islands, the easiest stretch of the Mozambican coast with kids. Tofo, further south, suits older kids and teens who want diving and whale sharks.
When to come
May–October is the easiest window for boat days with kids: calm seas, dry, mild. The green months (Dec–Mar) bring warmer swimming water but short afternoon storms. See the best time to visit Mozambique guide.
Getting here
Fly, don't drive, with young kids — the roads are long. There are direct flights to Vilanculos (VNX) from Johannesburg. See flights to Mozambique and our getting to Vilanculos guide.
Where families stay
Self-catering apartments, family lodges with pools, and beachfront houses suit a group far better than a single hotel room. We don't sell accommodation, but we know the coast — tell us your ages and budget on WhatsApp and we'll point you to the right fit.

Family questions

What parents ask us.

Is Mozambique safe for families with kids?
Yes — the southern coast where we operate (Vilanculos, the Bazaruto islands, Tofo) is a relaxed, family-friendly place and an easy region to travel with children. The two things to plan for are malaria (talk to a travel doctor about antimalarials for kids before you go) and travel insurance with medical-evacuation cover, which matters more with children. Beyond that it's shallow, calm water, short boat days, and warm welcomes. See our health guide for the detail.
Where in Mozambique is best for a family holiday?
For most families, Vilanculos — the bay is shallow and calm, the island crossings are short, and Magaruque's lagoon is about as gentle as open water gets. Tofo, further south, is better for older kids and teens who want diving and whale sharks. We base families in Vilanculos and add a Tofo leg when the kids are old enough.
Is Vilanculos good for toddlers and babies?
Very. The bay is shallow and calm, the town beach is soft sand for castles and shell-hunting, and Magaruque's lagoon is about as gentle as open water gets. Keep boat days short and early, mind the midday sun, and it's an easy trip with very small kids.
What's the best Mozambique tour for kids?
For families with younger children, the Magaruque Island day trip — shortest crossing, calmest lagoon, snorkeling you can stand up in. For confident swimmers and older kids, the full Bazaruto & Benguerra day is the showpiece, with the big dunes and Two Mile Reef.
Can young kids snorkel at Bazaruto?
Confident young swimmers, yes — and Magaruque is the easiest place to start, because the reef forms a natural pool in waist-deep water right off the beach. Life jackets are provided. For nervous or non-swimmers, there's plenty of shallow paddling and sandcastle time while everyone else snorkels.
Is there a kids' price for the island trips?
Yes — kids under 10 pay 50% off the adult price on our island day trips (for example, $55 for Magaruque, $60 for Bazaruto & Benguerra). Just tell us their ages when you book.
Do the kids need malaria tablets?
Coastal Mozambique is a malaria area, so antimalarials are worth taking seriously for children. The right option and dose depends on the child's age and weight, so this is a conversation for a travel doctor before you fly — not something to wing. We cover the wider picture in the health guide.
Is the tap water safe for kids to drink?
No — stick to bottled or filtered water for the whole family, and avoid ice at smaller places. It's cheap and available everywhere. Most lodges and restaurants already use filtered water.
When's the best time for a family holiday in Mozambique?
May to October is easiest — dry, mild, and calm seas for stress-free boat days. The green months (December–March) have warmer swimming water but short afternoon storms and the busy December holidays. More in the best time to visit guide.
Where do families stay in Vilanculos?
Self-catering apartments, family lodges with a pool, and beachfront houses for a group all work well — usually easier with kids than a single hotel room. We don't sell accommodation, but we know the town: send us your ages and budget on WhatsApp and we'll point you to the right fit.
