The best time to visit Mozambique is May to November — the dry season, when the southern coast is warm, the seas are calm, humpback whales pass through, and the water is clear. Travel in the wet season (December to April) is also fine, especially if you want fewer crowds and lower prices, but expect heat, afternoon storms, and a small cyclone risk in the far north.

Two seasons, both worth it

Mozambique has two main seasons: the dry season (May to November) and the wet season (December to April). Both have their appeal, and honestly, Vilanculos is beautiful year-round. But here’s what you need to know to pick the best time to travel to Mozambique for your specific trip.

Dry Season (May - November)

The dry season — May through November — is Mozambique’s peak travel season, and for good reason. Days are warm and sunny (25-30°C), humidity is lower, and rain is rare. Evenings can be pleasantly cool, especially June through August — you might even want a light jacket for sunset boat rides.

The dry season is ideal for:

  • Island-hopping to the Bazaruto Archipelago — calm seas and crystal visibility
  • Snorkeling and diving — underwater visibility is good through the dry season, clearest in the shoulder months (around May and October)
  • Whale watching — humpback whales migrate through from June to November, with peak sightings in August and September
  • Beach days — comfortable temperatures without the intense heat

The trade-off? This is when most visitors come, so popular spots and flights fill up faster. Book accommodation and tours in advance, especially for July-September.

Wet Season (December - April)

The wet season brings heat (30-35°C), humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. But don’t write it off — these storms usually pass quickly, and mornings are often gorgeous. The landscape turns lush green, and there are far fewer tourists.

The wet season is ideal for:

  • Budget travelers — lower prices on accommodation and some activities
  • Fewer crowds — you might have a beach to yourself
  • Birding — migratory birds arrive, and the birdlife is spectacular
  • Fishing — some of the best game fishing happens in the warmer months

The trade-off? Some roads can flood, boat crossings may be rough, and the occasional cyclone can disrupt plans (though Vilanculos is relatively sheltered compared to the far north). Mosquitoes are also more active — take malaria prevention seriously, especially from dusk to dawn. See our health guide for details.

When EKAYA recommends visiting

If you’re asking us personally? June through October is the sweet spot. You get the best weather, the whales, incredible diving conditions, and that magical golden light over the Bazaruto islands that makes everything look like a dream.

But if you want fewer people and lower prices and you don’t mind some heat and the occasional storm, March through May is an underrated window — the rains are tapering off, prices are low, and Vilanculos feels wonderfully local.

When to go for specific activities

A short cheat-sheet for the most common reasons people come.

  • Best time to go to Mozambique for whale watching: June to early November, with peak humpback sightings in August and September. Whale sharks are year-round but most reliable July–October around Tofo. See our full guide to whale watching in Mozambique for where and when to go.
  • Best time to travel to Mozambique for diving and snorkeling: June to October — coolest water (it can drop to around 22°C, so bring a thicker wetsuit), easiest sea conditions, and consistent winds; the water is clearest in the shoulder months, around May and October.
  • Best time for island-hopping in Bazaruto: May to November. Calm seas, crystal channels between Bazaruto, Benguerra, and Magaruque.
  • Best time for fishing: September to December, with billfish picking up in the warmer water.
  • Best time for budget travel: March to early May. Rains easing, prices low, lodges quiet.
  • Best time for a honeymoon: April or November for the shoulder-season trade-off (lovely weather, fewer people, lower lodge rates), or August–October if you want the humpback whale calves and peak conditions. See our Mozambique honeymoon guide for the full seasonal picture and sample itineraries.
  • Best time to avoid: mid-January to February if you’re nervous about storms — rare cyclones in the central and northern coast can disrupt boat days.

It’s always a good time for something

That’s the beauty of this place. There’s no truly bad time to visit — just different experiences depending on the season. Whether you’re here for whales, diving, fishing, or just unplugging on a pristine beach, we’ll help you make the most of whenever you come.
