How far Xai-Xai is from Maputo.

Xai-Xai is 229 km north of Maputo on the EN1, about four and a half hours door to door. The town is the capital of Gaza Province and sits a little inland; the beach, Praia do Xai-Xai, is a further stretch east toward the coast, which is where most visitors are actually headed. Tell us which one you want and we’ll drop you there — the fare is the same.

Praia do Xai-Xai is known for the coral reef running parallel to the shore, which forms sheltered natural pools at low tide, and for the loggerhead and leatherback turtles that come ashore to nest in season. It’s a working provincial beach town rather than a resort strip, which is much of its appeal.

It runs the same in reverse. Xai-Xai to Maputo is the identical private, door-to-door service for the same $190 — usually booked for a return flight out of the capital.

229 km, and about four and a half hours door to door on the EN1. That's the real driving time including the run out to the beach at the far end, not just city to city — which is why it's longer than the figures you'll find on distance calculators.
What's the difference between Xai-Xai and Praia do Xai-Xai?
Xai-Xai is the provincial capital, set slightly inland; Praia do Xai-Xai is its beach, a short run further east toward the coast. Most visitors mean the beach. We drive to either for the same $190 — just tell us the lodge or the address when you book.
What is the beach at Xai-Xai like?
Praia do Xai-Xai has a coral reef running parallel to the shore, close enough in that it forms sheltered natural pools at low tide — good for snorkelling and for swimming with children away from open surf. Loggerhead and leatherback turtles nest along this coast in season. It's a working provincial beach rather than a resort strip.
Do you run Xai-Xai back to Maputo as well?
Yes — exactly the same private, door-to-door service in the other direction, at the same $190. Tell us your date, your pickup point and your flight time if you have one, and we'll build the drive around it.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car — not a 4x4 — carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Is the transfer car a 4x4? My lodge says I need one.
Our standard transfer cars aren't 4x4s — so if your lodge sits at the end of a sand or rough access track, you must tell us when you book. We do have 4x4s and will happily arrange one, but we don't run the lodges, so we can't know what each access road requires. Check with your accommodation, tell us on WhatsApp, and we'll send the right vehicle.
Can we carry on to Chizavane or Chidenguele?
Yes — Chizavane is about 40 km north of Xai-Xai and Chidenguele roughly 70 km, both on the same coast, and we drive all of them. If you're moving up the coast rather than returning to Maputo, tell us the route and dates and we'll quote the legs together.
