Praia do Xai-Xai is 229 km from Maputo by road, about 4h15 door to door. The road runs north on the EN1 to Xai-Xai, the capital of Gaza Province, then east to the beach, and it’s paved the whole way.

Praia do Xai-Xai has a reef running parallel to the shore, which forms sheltered natural pools at low tide, and loggerhead and leatherback turtles nest along this coast in season. It’s a provincial beach town rather than a resort strip, which is much of its appeal.

Praia do Xai-Xai is 229 km from Maputo by road, about 4h15 door to door. The road runs north on the EN1 to Xai-Xai town, then out to the beach. We stop on the way when you need to stretch your legs, and we leave when it suits you.
What's the difference between Xai-Xai and Praia do Xai-Xai?
Xai-Xai is the provincial capital of Gaza, set slightly inland; Praia do Xai-Xai is its beach, a short run further east. Most visitors mean the beach. We drive to either for the same $190: just tell us the lodge or the address when you book.
Do you run Xai-Xai to Maputo as well?
Yes, exactly the same private, door-to-door service in the other direction, at the same $190. Tell us your date, your pickup and your flight time if you have one, and we'll plan the drive around it.
Can you collect us from Maputo airport?
Yes, at the same $190. We meet your flight at Maputo airport (MPM) with your name on a sign and drive straight to Xai-Xai. Send us your flight number and we'll track it.
Can we carry on to Chizavane or Chidenguele?
Yes. Chizavane is about 40 km north of Xai-Xai and Chidenguele roughly 70 km, both on the same coast, and we drive all of them. Tell us the route and dates and we'll quote the legs together.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car (not a 4x4) carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing fishing gear, boards or a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Is the transfer car a 4x4? My lodge says I need one.
Our standard transfer cars aren't 4x4s, so if your lodge sits at the end of a sand or rough access track, you must tell us when you book. We do have 4x4s and will happily arrange one, but we don't run the lodges, so we can't know what each access road requires. Check with your accommodation, tell us on WhatsApp, and we'll send the right vehicle.
Is it dangerous to drive at night in Mozambique?
We wouldn't recommend tourists driving themselves at night: the roads are unfamiliar, lighting is limited, and animals and pedestrians share the roadside after dark. Our drivers are local and very experienced with night driving, so they know the roads and the conditions, so a late flight or an early start is no problem. And if part of your trip is self-drive, we can put a driver on that stretch too.
