Maputo, Mozambique — the capital city on the Indian Ocean

Where to Eat & Drink in Maputo.

The capital eats like a port city should.

Maputo is the rare capital where a Goan curry, a plate of Madeiran espetada, fresh sushi and a piri-piri prawn are all within a few blocks of each other — a port city that has been folding Portuguese, Indian, and Mozambican kitchens into one another for a century, and one of the best places to eat anywhere on this coast.

Across the cuisines

Where to eat in Maputo.

Maputo eats far beyond its size — the legacy of a trading port where Portuguese, Indian, Goan and Mozambican kitchens have shared the same streets for a century. Most of the restaurants below sit in the leafy Polana and Sommerschield blocks, an easy tuk-tuk ride apart. We’ve grouped them by what you’re hungry for. Tap “on the map” on any card to open it in Google Maps.

Common questions

What people ask.

Where should I eat in Maputo?
It depends what you're after. For Mozambican classics, O Coqueiro (matapa and curries) and the barracas at FEIMA. For the modern Maputo table, Txapo Txapo, Lugar e Meio and Salt are the names locals drop first. Seafood means Zambi or Ocean in town, or a trip across the bay to O Farol in Katembe. For Portuguese, A Nossa Tasca; for sushi, Makimono or Wabi Sabi; for the best croissants in the city, Chez Fred.
What food is Maputo known for?
Maputo is known for seafood cooked simply and well — grilled prawns and crayfish under piri-piri, the chilli-garlic sauce that defines the Mozambican coast. The other half of the city's food is Portuguese (espetada, pastéis, good bread and coffee) and the Indian and Goan kitchens left by generations of trade. Look for matapa, a stew of cassava leaves with peanut and coconut, on most Mozambican menus.
Where is the best seafood in Maputo?
For seafood in the city, Zambi and Ocean are the dependable names, and Campo di Mare for an Italian-seafood crossover on the water. The local secret is to cross the new bridge to Katembe, where O Farol and Restaurante do Diogo serve prawns by the kilo with the Maputo skyline laid out across the bay.
Do I need to book a table in Maputo?
For most places you can walk in, especially at lunch. For the small, popular dinner spots — Bel Piatto, Lugar e Meio, Salt and weekend nights at Dhow — it's worth booking ahead, and essential on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Can I pay by card in Maputo, or do I need cash?
The bigger restaurants and mall venues take cards, and a few (like Bica) are card-only — but plenty of smaller spots, takeaways and the FEIMA barracas are cash-first. Carry meticais (MZN); a Visa card works more reliably than Mastercard at ATMs. More in our money and costs guide.
How much does a meal cost in Maputo?
A grilled-chicken takeaway or a barraca plate runs cheap — roughly MZN 300–600. A mid-range dinner (pizza, pasta, a Portuguese main) lands around MZN 800–1,500 a head. The waterfront seafood and fine-dining rooms — Salt, Dhow, the Katembe prawns — are the splurge, MZN 2,000+ with wine. A cold 2M or Laurentina beer is about MZN 100–150.
