Gorongosa National Park is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife comebacks, at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley in central Mozambique. The park lost around 90% of its large animals during Mozambique’s civil war, and has been restored so completely by the Gorongosa Restoration Project that a 2022 aerial count recorded over 110,000 large animals — lions, elephants, buffalo and enormous waterbuck herds back on the Lake Urema floodplain. It’s the country’s land-safari answer to the coast, best paired with a beach week rather than swapped for one.

Gorongosa doesn’t allow self-drive inside the park: guided game drives leave from Chitengo Camp and Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge in the park’s own open 4x4s.
