How far is Vilanculos from Gorongosa National Park?

475 km, about 10 hours.

Chitengo, Gorongosa’s main camp, is about 475 km from Vilanculos by road, about 10 hours’ drive. The road runs north on the EN1 past Inchope, then on gravel through the park gate to Chitengo, and the same way back.

Gorongosa National Park is one of Africa’s great wildlife comebacks, at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley in central Mozambique. Restored by the Gorongosa Restoration Project, it counted 110,513 large animals in its October 2024 aerial survey.

It's one fixed price of $630 per car, not per seat, whichever way you're going.

How far is Vilanculos from Gorongosa, and how long is the drive?
Chitengo, Gorongosa's main camp, is about 475 km from Vilanculos by road, about 10 hours' drive. You go north on the EN1 past Inchope, then turn off onto the gravel road through the park gate to Chitengo. It's a full day, so we usually leave in the morning.
Do you run Gorongosa to Vilanculos as well?
Yes, the same private, door-to-door service in the other direction, at the same $630. Gorongosa is usually a stay of a few nights, so most people book both legs: tell us your dates and we'll confirm them together.
Can you drive us all the way to our camp in the park?
We drive you to Chitengo, the park's main camp, or to your lodge if it's reached on the same road. Tell us where you're staying when you book. If it's somewhere further into the park, we'll check the access and confirm before you book.
Can we break the drive and sleep a night on the way?
Yes, the drive doesn't have to be done in one day. If you'd rather stop a night somewhere along the way and carry on in the morning, we'll drive it that way. Tell us where you want to stop and how many nights when you message, and we'll build the route around it and confirm the fare.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for one 4x4 with driver, carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing camera gear or a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Why go to Gorongosa?
Gorongosa is one of Africa's great wildlife comebacks. The park lost most of its large animals in Mozambique's civil war, and the October 2024 aerial count recorded 110,513 large animals, including 873 elephants and 1,958 buffalo. It's the country's land safari, the perfect match for a beach week on the coast.

Is it dangerous to drive at night in Mozambique?
We wouldn't recommend tourists driving themselves at night: the roads are unfamiliar, lighting is limited, and animals and pedestrians share the roadside after dark. Our drivers are local and very experienced with night driving, so they know the roads and the conditions, so a late flight or an early start is no problem. And if part of your trip is self-drive, we can put a driver on that stretch too.
