Santa Carolina, Bazaruto and Benguerra — three islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago

Bazaruto Archipelago · Mozambique

Santa Carolina, Bazaruto
& Benguerra.
All in one day.

Overview

Santa Carolina, Bazaruto & Benguerra. All of it, in a day.

The Santa Carolina, Bazaruto & Benguerra Day Trip is a full day from Vilanculos covering all three signature islands of the Bazaruto ArchipelagoSanta Carolina (Paradise Island), Bazaruto, and Benguerra — in a single trip.

Short on time in Vilanculos? This is the day that fits the whole archipelago into one. Snorkel with turtles on the reefs around Santa Carolina, walk through the 1950s Paradise Island Hotel ruins, climb the famous dunes on Bazaruto, look for dugongs in the seagrass channel between Bazaruto and Benguerra, and finish on a quiet stretch of Benguerra beach.

In Portuguese: Ilha de Santa Carolina (also Ilha do Paraíso) — 59 ha; Ilha do Bazaruto — 10,700 ha; Ilha de Benguerra — 2,399 ha. One trip, three of the five islands inside Bazaruto National Park.

It's a long day — about eight and a half hours on and off the water — but the most ground anyone covers in the archipelago in a single trip. Groups of up to 15 with a local skipper who knows the channels, the reefs, and where the dugongs are feeding this week. Want a slower pace on each island? See the single-island options: Santa Carolina or Bazaruto & Benguerra. Want the boat to yourselves? We run private charters on the same route — message us and we'll sort it out.

Itinerary

The day, hour by hour.

  1. 8:00 AM

    We pick you up

The boat comes to your hotel or the nearest beach. Quick safety briefing, fresh water, and we're off. Long day ahead — we leave on time.

    Speed boat at Vilankulo marina
  2. 9:00 AM

    Arrive at Santa Carolina

About an hour across the channel to Paradise Island — the northernmost island in the archipelago. We land at the long white beach below the old hotel. Keep an eye on the water on the way: we cross seagrass beds where dolphins, turtles, and the occasional dugong come up.

Arriving at Santa Carolina, Paradise Island, by speed boat
  3. 9:15 AM

The old hotel + walk the island

We walk up to the ruins of the 1950s Santa Carolina Hotel — ten buildings, a chapel, and the famous first-floor terrace where guests drank sundowners through the 60s. Empty since 1975. After the ruins, time to wander the palm-lined interior or one of the three beaches before lunch.

  4. 12:00 PM

    Lunch on the beach

A proper spread, prepared fresh by our crew right on the sand. Seafood buffet, chicken, rice, chakalaka, fresh salads, and tropical fruit. Vegan and vegetarian options always available — just let us know when you book.

Beach lunch on Santa Carolina — seafood, rice, chakalaka
  5. 12:30 PM

    Snorkel with turtles

A short ride to the reef just south of the island — shallow coral, thousands of fish, and the sea turtles that pass through with the tide. Equipment included. Reefs here are some of the cleanest in the Indian Ocean.

  6. 1:00 PM

    Across to Bazaruto

About thirty minutes south to Bazaruto — the largest island in the archipelago, 10,700 hectares of dune forest and coastline. We land at Ponta Dondo, the southern point of the island, where the dunes rise straight off the beach. Iron Age archaeological remains have been found here — people have been coming ashore at this point for a very long time.

  7. 1:30 PM

    The dunes

An hour on Bazaruto to walk the towering white-sand dunes above Ponta Dondo — one of the signature sights of the archipelago. A short barefoot climb, a long view across the channel to the mainland, and back down to the boat.

  8. 2:30 PM

Dugong watch on the way to Benguerra

We leave Bazaruto and slow down through the seagrass channel between the two islands. Ten minutes scanning for dugongs — the Bazaruto Archipelago holds one of the last viable populations in the western Indian Ocean, and this channel is where they graze. No promises, but this is where we see them.

  9. 2:50 PM

Benguerra — swim, walk, find the crabs

Forty minutes on Benguerra. Swim straight off the beach, or walk across to the far side — the eastern shore is full of ghost crabs scurrying in and out of the sand at low tide. Quieter than Bazaruto, usually just you and the sand.

  10. 3:30 PM

    Head back to Vilankulo

We start the crossing back as the afternoon light turns. Eyes on the water again for dolphins and dugongs on the way home. You're back around 4:30 PM — plenty of time to shower before dinner.

Questions we get

Before you book.

Is three islands in one day too much?
It's a long day — about eight and a half hours — but the timing works because we keep the moves tight. An hour to Santa Carolina, three hours there, thirty minutes to Bazaruto, an hour on the dunes, twenty minutes across to Benguerra (with a dugong stop), forty minutes on Benguerra, an hour back to Vilankulo. You're not rushing — you're just on the boat for the longer crossings.
How is this different from the Bazaruto & Benguerra Day Trip?
Same crew, same boat, same beach lunch — but we add Santa Carolina (Paradise Island) at the start. Santa Carolina is the northernmost island, with the 1950s Paradise Island Hotel ruins and reefs full of turtles. The trade-off: it's a longer day (8.5 hours vs ~8) and a bigger crossing. The Bazaruto & Benguerra Day Trip ($120) is the simpler version. This one ($200) is for travelers who want to see the lot in one go.
Will we actually see a dugong?
No guarantees — they're wild animals — but we stop for ten minutes in the channel between Bazaruto and Benguerra, which is one of the best places on the East African coast to see them. The Bazaruto Archipelago holds one of the last viable populations in the western Indian Ocean, and this seagrass channel is where they graze.
Are all three islands inside Bazaruto National Park?
Yes. Bazaruto National Marine Park covers all five islands of the archipelago and 143,000 hectares of surrounding ocean. Created in 1971, co-managed since 2017 by the Mozambican government and African Parks. Park entry fees are included in your trip price, and our skippers follow park rules on speed, anchoring, and wildlife distance.
What are the park rules we need to follow?
A few things, all of them straightforward. Don't touch or stand on coral. Don't touch or feed wildlife. Don't collect shells, sand, or anything else from the islands or reef — this includes fragments of the old hotel on Santa Carolina. No fishing outside designated zones. No fires on the beach except where indicated. No drones without prior written authorisation from the park (we can't get this on the day — you'd need to apply in advance). And please take all your rubbish back with you. Our crew briefs everyone before we land, and we're happy to answer questions on the boat.
Do you pick us up from our hotel?
Yes — the boat comes to your hotel or the nearest beach at 8 AM. Just tell us where you're staying when you book. We leave on time on this trip — the day's tight.
Can we book a private boat?
Absolutely. Same trip, same crew, just your group on the boat. Message us for private charter pricing.
Is this suitable for kids? Is there a kids price?
Yes — and yes. Kids under 10 pay 50% off the adult price ($100 for this trip). One thing to keep in mind: it's a long day on the water with several crossings. Confident kids handle it well. Life jackets provided, and there's plenty of beach time at each stop.
Do I need to be a confident swimmer to snorkel?
No. The snorkeling is over shallow reef in calm water, and life jackets are included — you can float on the surface and look down without swimming hard. Prefer to stay dry? The beaches at every stop are reason enough to come, and plenty of guests skip the snorkel and stay on the sand. If you're nervous in the water, tell the crew — they stay close and keep an eye on everyone.
It's a long day on the boat — will anyone get seasick?
Most people are fine. The water around the islands is shallow and usually calm, and you're never far from a beach to stand on — but the open crossings, especially out to Santa Carolina, can pick up some chop when the wind is up. If you know you're prone to motion sickness, take something before we leave (the pharmacies in town stock it), sit toward the middle of the boat, and keep your eyes on the horizon. Tell the crew if you start to feel it — they've seen it all and will help.
What if the weather is bad?
Safety first — if conditions aren't right, we do not run unsafe trips. Santa Carolina in particular is more exposed than the closer islands, so we're careful about wind and swell. If we can't run this trip on your day, we'll offer the shorter Bazaruto & Benguerra Day Trip instead, or reschedule.
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
We always have vegan and vegetarian options available. Just let us know when you book.
Can we buy anything on the islands?
No — none of the three have shops, kiosks, or vending machines. Whatever you want for the day (snacks, extra sunscreen, cash, a book for the beach), bring it with you. The one thing you don't need to pack is water — we bring plenty, cold and all day.
How do we pay?
We accept cash, card, bank transfer, and mobile money. Payment terms are confirmed in your quote based on your booking details.
