Kitesurfing in Vilanculos is some of the most reliable flat-water riding on the East African coast — a wide, shallow, sandy bay that’s about as forgiving as it gets for learning. Flat water and a soft sandy bottom mean a beginner’s mistakes end in a splash, not a scare.

The wind comes with the southerly trades through Mozambique’s dry season — August to November, 18–25 knots most afternoons — and the launch beach is right in town, walking distance from most lodges, cafés, and the dive shops.

When is kitesurfing season in Vilanculos?
August through November is the prime window, with the steadiest, strongest wind usually in October and November. The southerly trade winds switch on through Mozambique’s dry season, blowing 18–25 knots most afternoons in the peak weeks. Vilanculos Bay is one of the most reliable flat-water kite spots on the East African coast.
Where do you kitesurf in Vilanculos?
Vilanculos Bay itself — a wide, shallow, sandy bay with clean wind angles and minimal hazards. The flat-water section is on the inside of the bay; bigger water and small chop on the outer edge for those wanting it. The launch beach is in town, walking distance from most lodges.
Are there kitesurfing schools in Vilanculos?

Can I learn to kitesurf here?
Yes — Vilanculos Bay is one of the better places in southern Africa to learn. Flat water, consistent wind, sandy bottom, and shallow lagoons mean beginner mistakes don’t end in panic. Lessons typically run as 3–6 hour beginner packages.
Do I need to bring my own gear?
If you’re experienced, yes — bringing your own kit is the safer bet. Rentals are available in season but supply is limited. If you’re a beginner, everything you need is included with lessons.
What if there is no wind, or the weather is bad?
No wind means no kiting — if there's nothing to ride, we move your session at no cost. Beyond that, the school calls the conditions: if the wind or the water is unsafe, nobody goes out. Grey skies, rain, or a day that's gustier than ideal aren't cancellations. You see the conditions for yourself before you rig up, and going out is your decision. Do I need to be fit? Can you accommodate limited mobility?
This is an active water sport — you'll need to be a confident swimmer and in reasonable physical shape, since you're in the water and moving for much of the lesson. It's not well suited to limited mobility, but we'd never assume — if you're keen and not sure, message us before you book and we'll be honest about what's possible.
How far in advance should I book?
In high season — June to September, plus the Christmas holidays — we'd book days ahead to be safe, since the best dates fill up. But don't let a late plan stop you: message us anytime, even same-day, and if we've got space we'll do our best to fit you in.
What language is the tour in? Do I need to speak English or Portuguese?
You don't need to share a language with us to enjoy this. Our crew speaks English and Portuguese, but this is a see-and-do trip, not a guided lecture — the wind, the water, and the ride do the talking. We host guests from all over the world, plenty of whom speak neither, and everyone has a great day. We'll always make sure you know what's happening and when.
