Snorkeler over Two Mile Reef, Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Bazaruto Archipelago · Mozambique

Snorkeling
in Vilanculos.

Overview

Three reefs, three day trips.

Snorkeling in Vilanculos takes you out to the reefs of the Bazaruto Archipelago — warm, clear water over thriving coral, with reef fish, turtles, the odd reef shark, and whale sharks in these waters year-round, the same as Tofo. You reach the reef by boat, built into a day of beaches and lunch.

Three sites, three day trips. Two Mile Reef (on our Bazaruto & Benguerra trip) is the signature site — a long shallow reef between two of the archipelago’s biggest islands, fish-rich, with reef-shark and turtle sightings. Santa Carolina’s reef (on our Santa Carolina trip) wraps the northernmost island next to the abandoned 1950s Paradise Island Hotel ruins. The Magaruque lagoon (on our Magaruque trip) is the calm, shallow option — family-friendly, beginner-friendly, the easiest first snorkel of your trip.

Both Vilanculos PADI dive operators (Odyssea Dive, Bulldog Divers) also run guided snorkel-only trips for travelers who want a smaller boat or a guided briefing on the marine life rather than a full day-trip format. Tell us what you’re after and we’ll match you to the right option.

Yes, whale sharks are seen in the Bazaruto waters too — year-round, the same as at Tofo. They feed in these waters through the year, and snorkelers meet them out on the reefs and in the channels. When you do, the code is the same one we follow everywhere: no touching, no chasing, keep 3 metres from the body and 4 from the tail, and let the animal set the pace. Whale sharks are harmless filter-feeders — they eat plankton, not people — so it’s safe to snorkel alongside one; the distance is for the shark’s sake as much as yours.

Questions we get

Before you book.

Where is the best snorkeling in Vilanculos?
Two Mile Reef — a long shallow reef between Bazaruto and Benguerra islands — is the headline site. It’s a 30–40 minute boat ride from Vilanculos, the water is 2–6 m deep over the reef, and visibility is typically 10–20 m. We include a Two Mile Reef stop on most of our island day trips.
Do I need to book a separate snorkeling trip?
No — snorkeling is built into our flagship day trips. The Bazaruto & Benguerra trip stops at Two Mile Reef. The Santa Carolina trip includes the calmer reef around the island. The Magaruque trip includes a shallow lagoon snorkel that works well for kids and beginners. All gear is provided.
Can I snorkel without going on a tour?
From the Vilanculos shoreline itself, no — the bay is shallow and sandy, not reef. The reef is offshore. You need a boat. Either come on one of our day trips, or book a guided snorkeling-only trip with one of the dive operators.
Is Vilanculos snorkeling family-friendly?
Yes — the Magaruque lagoon is shallow, calm, and safe for kids who can swim with a snorkel. Two Mile Reef has slightly deeper water but is fine for confident kid snorkelers. Our crew briefs everyone on tides and currents before getting in.
What will I see snorkeling?
Reef fish (parrotfish, wrasse, butterflyfish, sergeant majors), soft and hard corals, sea fans, occasional reef sharks (small, harmless), turtles, and bigger animals: whale sharks are in the Bazaruto waters year-round, the same as at Tofo, with mantas around in the warm summer months (December–February).
Can you swim with whale sharks in Vilanculos? Is it safe and ethical?
You can — whale sharks are in the Bazaruto waters year-round, the same as at Tofo, and snorkelers meet them out on the reefs and in the channels. It’s safe and ethical when done right: whale sharks are harmless filter-feeders (they eat plankton, not people), and they’re Endangered on the IUCN Red List, so the code matters — no touching, no chasing, keep 3 metres from the body and 4 from the tail, and never block the animal’s path. Our crews brief you before you get in. For the trip built around finding them, see the Whale Shark Ocean Safari.
