Vilanculos Airport (VNX): flights and getting into town.
Vilanculos Airport (IATA: VNX) is the airport for Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Archipelago, about 5 km from the town centre. It is a small regional airport with direct flights in from Johannesburg and Maputo.
Airlink flies direct from Johannesburg, which is the easiest way in from overseas, and LAM Mozambique Airlines connects Vilanculos with Maputo. Schedules change through the year, so check with the airline before you book a lodge around a flight.
In town, people get around by txopela (tuk-tuk) or taxi: agree the price before you get in.

- Long-distance bus Nagi Investimentos and other companies run buses up the EN1. They leave Maputo before dawn and take most of the day. Some go on north to Beira and drop you at Pambara junction, about 20 km from town, where a chapa (shared minibus) takes you in. Ask at the terminal whether yours goes into Vilanculos. Going back, the Nagi bus leaves Vilanculos at around 4:30 am.
- Drive yourself About 700 km up the EN1. Fill up in Xai-Xai or Maxixe, and plan to arrive before dark. Turn off at Pambara junction for the last 20 km into town.

- Drive yourself About 315 km on the EN1 from Tofo, around Inhambane Bay. From Maxixe it is 242 km, about 3h40. Drive in daylight.
- Bus or chapa via Maxixe Cross from Inhambane to Maxixe on the small passenger ferry, then take a bus or chapa (shared minibus) north. The Nagi bus costs about 700 MT. Chapas leave when they are full, not on a timetable, and may stop at Pambara junction rather than in town. Start early.
Coming down from the north, you drive south on the EN1 all the way to Pambara junction, then 20 km into town.
- Drive yourself Chimoio is about 490 km away, around 8h30. Beira is a similar day on the road. Set off early so you arrive before dark.
- Long-distance bus Buses between Beira or Chimoio and Maputo run the EN1 past Pambara junction, about 20 km from town. A chapa (shared minibus) takes you the rest of the way. Buses leave before dawn.

Yes. Vilanculos Airport (IATA: VNX) is about 5 km from the town centre. It has direct flights from Johannesburg with Airlink and from Maputo with LAM Mozambique Airlines. We run airport transfers from $25 if you would like a driver waiting.
What airlines fly to Vilanculos Airport?

Should I fly into Vilanculos (VNX) or Inhambane (INH)?
It depends where you’re staying. Fly into Vilanculos Airport (VNX) for Vilanculos and the Bazaruto islands: Airlink flies there direct from Johannesburg, and LAM flies in from Maputo. Fly into Inhambane Airport (INH) for Tofo and Barra, which is about 22 km from Tofo. Only LAM flies to Inhambane, not Airlink. Heading to Tofo from South Africa? A common alternative is to fly direct to Vilanculos and take our private transfer down the EN1, about 5 hours, from $190 per car. Visiting both? Fly into one airport and out of the other, and we’ll drive you between them.

Fly direct from Johannesburg with Airlink to Vilanculos Airport (VNX). From Maputo, the domestic flight is faster than the drive, and if you would rather not drive yourself we run a private transfer from Maputo that goes door to door.
How do I get to Vilanculos from the UK, US or Europe?
Route through Johannesburg, then take the direct Airlink flight to Vilanculos. Flying into Maputo and hopping north also works, it just adds a connection. How far is Vilanculos from Maputo, and how long is the drive?
About 700 km, around 10 hours on the EN1. Plan a fuel stop at Xai-Xai or Maxixe. If you would rather not drive the full day, we can break the trip in Tofo, arrange a private transfer end to end, or help with a rental car.
How do I get from Maputo to Bazaruto Island?
Get to Vilanculos first, by air (about 1h15) or by road (about 10 hours), then take a boat: the islands are 30 to 90 minutes from the Vilanculos beach. We run the Bazaruto day trip and boat transfers to the island lodges.
How long does it take to drive from Johannesburg to Vilanculos?
Plan on two days. Most people break the trip overnight in Maputo or Xai-Xai. South African-registered vehicles need a Mozambican terceiro third-party insurance disc and a vehicle permit, see our self-drive guide.
Is there a bus to Vilanculos?
Yes. Long-distance buses run up the EN1, and Nagi Investimentos is one of the main companies. From Maputo the fare is about 2,000 MT, and from Maxixe, across the water from Inhambane, about 700 MT (what we were quoted in October 2026). Buses leave before dawn and Maputo takes most of the day. Going south, the Nagi bus leaves Vilanculos at around 4:30 am, so check the time the afternoon before. Some buses carry on north and drop you at Pambara junction, about 20 km from town, where a chapa (shared minibus) takes you in. If you would rather skip the changes, our private transfer from Maputo goes door to door.
How long is the drive to Vilanculos from Maxixe, Tofo or Chimoio?
From Maxixe it is 242 km, about 3h40. From Tofo, around Inhambane Bay, about 315 km and 5 hours. From Chimoio, about 490 km and 8h30. In every case you leave the EN1 at Pambara junction and drive the last 20 km on a tarred road into town. Or skip the wheel: we run a private transfer from Tofo.
Can I drive to Vilanculos at night?
No. UK travel advice says to travel by road outside the major cities only in daylight, and warns that accidents are common because of poor road conditions. Plan your day so you reach Pambara junction and the last 20 km into town before dark. If you have to travel late, book a private transfer with us instead: our drivers are local and experienced on these roads.
Is it safe to travel to Vilanculos?
Yes, with normal precautions. It is a small town where tourists are a known, welcome part of the economy. Don't flash valuables and take a txopela at night. The full picture is in our Mozambique safety guide.
