Vilanculos sits ~700 km north of Maputo on Mozambique's southern coast. There are direct flights from Johannesburg, an easy LAM hop from Maputo, the EN1 drive, and the bus. We've laid out all of them.

Getting to Vilanculos
from overseas.

Overseas travellers should route to Vilanculos through Johannesburg, not Maputo. Vilanculos is one of the few places on this coast with its own direct international flight: Airlink runs a daily nonstop from Johannesburg to Vilanculos Airport (VNX), about 1 hour 35 in the air, landing 2.4 km from town. It skips Maputo, a second immigration queue, and a domestic connection entirely.

From the UK and Europe

There are no nonstop flights from the UK to Mozambique, so the question is only which hub you cross. From London, BA and Virgin fly straight to Johannesburg overnight; pick up the Airlink morning departure and you’re on the beach the same day — roughly 16–20 hours door to door. The other way in is Maputo, nonstop from Lisbon on TAP or Doha on Qatar Airways, then a domestic hop north of about 1h15. That routing is sometimes cheaper and pairs well with a night in Maputo, but it adds a connection you don’t strictly need.

From the US

The US has the same two options with longer first legs — 22–30 hours of total travel whichever way you go. Via Doha (Qatar) or Addis Ababa (Ethiopian) lands you in Maputo; via Johannesburg lands you one short Airlink flight from Vilanculos. Most of our North American guests take the Johannesburg route for the simple reason that the last leg is a single 95-minute flight instead of a connection plus a drive.

Give the connection a night

Build a buffer into whichever hub you cross. The Airlink departure leaves Johannesburg late morning, so an overnight long-haul that lands at dawn connects comfortably — but a delayed inbound doesn’t, and the next one is tomorrow. Travellers on tight same-day connections are the ones who end up rebooking. If yours is tight, sleep at the hub and fly up fresh; you’ll lose an evening and keep the holiday.

From Johannesburg

A direct LAM flight makes Vilanculos one of the most accessible beach destinations from South Africa. Driving is also possible — a long but doable two-day haul through Mozambique.

From Cape Town

There’s no direct flight from Cape Town — every route connects through Johannesburg. The good news: pairing a Cape Town city break with a Vilanculos beach week is one of the best two-stop trips in southern Africa.

From Tofo

A common pairing — most travelers who do Tofo also do Vilanculos. The drive is the right call; there’s no direct flight.

    Step-by-step
    1. From Tofo Market, take a chapa toward Inhambane — and plan the timing so you reach Maxixe before midday, when the Vilanculos buses run. We can run you from your hotel to the chapa if you’d rather not start the day hunting one.
    2. Ride the chapa to Inhambane city (last stop, the market), then walk to the ferry to Maxixe and cross the bay (~30 min). Leave luggage at the front of the boat.
    3. In Maxixe, buy your ticket at the Nagi Investimentos stand in the interprovincial bus terminal and take a bus north to Vilanculos. In high season a seat isn’t guaranteed, so go early.
