From

Cape Town Vilanculos

There’s no direct flight from Cape Town — every route connects through Johannesburg. The good news: pairing a Cape Town city break with a Vilanculos beach week is one of the best two-stop trips in southern Africa.

  • Cape Town → Johannesburg → Vilanculos (VNX)
    Duration
~2h to JNB + ~1h45 to VNX, plus layover
    Fare
    from ~$450 return (both legs)
    Frequency
    CPT–JNB hourly; JNB–VNX several times a week
    Operator
CPT–JNB on any SA carrier; JNB–VNX on Airlink or LAM

The JNB–Vilanculos leg only runs on certain days and can pause seasonally — build the trip around it. If connections don’t line up, an overnight in Johannesburg is common. Some travelers route via Maputo (cheaper, longer).

  • Self-drive (the long haul)
    Duration
3+ days · ~2,800 km to the border alone

Almost nobody drives this — Cape Town to the Mozambique border is two full days before you even start the EN1. Fly to Johannesburg and connect. We mention it only so you can rule it out.

  • EKAYA pickup once you land Private
    Duration
    ~10 min from VNX

Sort the flights yourself; we take it from the moment you land at Vilanculos Airport.

From

A common pairing — most travelers who do Tofo also do Vilanculos. The drive is the right call; there’s no direct flight.

  • Self-drive Tofo → Vilanculos
    Duration
    ~5 hours · ~280 km
    Fare
    Fuel ~$30

Paved the whole way (EN1). Backtrack to Inhambane first, then north on the EN1.

  • Tofo → Inhambane chapa, then long-distance bus
    Duration
    ~6–7 hours
    Fare
    MZN 800–1,200

Two-leg journey: chapa or taxi from Tofo to Inhambane bus terminal, then a TCO/Nagi bus heading north. Cheaper but more friction.

  • EKAYA private transfer Private
    Duration
    ~5 hours
    Fare
    On request

Door-to-door. We can stop in Maxixe or Massinga if you want a break.
