  3. 3

    We collect you and drive

Your driver picks you up at your Vilanculos door in our own 4x4 and takes the tar to Mapinhane, then the gravel in to Zinave — start to gate.

The route

How to get from Vilanculos to Zinave.

The drive from Vilanculos to Zinave National Park is about 6 to 7 hours — roughly 250 to 300 km, and only the first part is tar. You head back out to the EN1 and down to the Mapinhane junction, then turn west onto around 110 km of gravel to the village of Mabote, and finish on a stretch of two-track to Zinave’s Tungo Tungo entrance gate. As a private transfer it’s one high-clearance 4x4 and one driver the whole way, so there’s no hire car to arrange and no gravel to navigate yourself.

Zinave National Park is Mozambique’s first Big Five national park, on the banks of the Save River in Inhambane Province. Managed by the government conservation authority ANAC and the Peace Parks Foundation since 2015, it has been rewilded almost from scratch — more than 2,400 animals across 16 species reintroduced since then, and black and white rhino brought back in 2022, the first viable founder populations of both species in a Mozambican park. It sits inside the Great Limpopo cross-border conservation area, so it’s genuinely wild and almost empty of other visitors.

A 4x4 isn’t optional out here — the road in is gravel and sand, and it can get slow or impassable in the rains from about November to April. The dry season, roughly May to October, is the easy window: firm roads and the best wildlife, as animals gather near water. Tell us your dates and we’ll give you an honest read on the road.

Before you ask

The questions we get most.

How much is a transfer from Vilanculos to Zinave National Park?
A private Vilanculos–Zinave transfer is $470 (≈ 30,000 MZN) per vehicle, one way — a high-clearance 4x4 with driver for the whole gravel run. Message us with your dates and we'll confirm it; no online payment, no obligation.
How long is the drive from Vilanculos to Zinave?
About 6 to 7 hours — roughly 250 to 300 km. You go back out to the EN1 and down to the Mapinhane junction, then it's about 110 km of gravel west to Mabote and a final stretch of track to the Tungo Tungo entrance gate. It's a full day inland, so we leave early.
Do I need a 4x4 to get to Zinave?
Yes — the road in from the EN1 is gravel and sand, not tar, and a high-clearance 4x4 is essential, especially in the rains from about November to April. That's exactly what we drive, so you don't have to hire or handle one yourself — you just sit back for the day.
Can you bring us back, or wait while we visit the park?
Yes. The $470 is the one-way fare per vehicle; tell us if you want a return run, or a driver who stays with you for the visit, and we'll quote that for your dates. Many people pair it with nights inside the park at Zinave's own camp.
What is there to see at Zinave?
Zinave is Mozambique's first Big Five national park — elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion and, since 2022, black and white rhino, all brought back through one of southern Africa's biggest rewilding programmes. It's wild and uncrowded, on the banks of the Save River, and part of the Great Limpopo cross-border conservation area.
When is the best time to go?
The dry season — roughly May to October — is easiest for the roads and best for wildlife, as animals gather near water and the gravel is firm. The rains from about November to April can make the inland track slow or impassable, so tell us your dates and we'll give you an honest read.
Do you do other routes besides Zinave?
Yes — private transfers all over the region: the Vilanculos airport run, Vilanculos to Tofo, Maputo to Vilanculos, our Vilanculos–Gorongosa park transfer, and custom routes on request. Tell us where you're headed and we'll quote it.
