    Between the EN1 and Mabote it’s a gravel road, with a local driver who knows it. Need to stretch your legs? Just say, and we’ll pull over.

    Between Mabote and the park it’s a sand and gravel track. This is the part that needs a 4x4, and it’s why we send one.

    What if it’s been raining?

    The rains, roughly November to April, can make the road slow or even impassable. Tell us your dates and we’ll give you an honest read on the road before you book.

    Your camp, or back to Vilanculos

    Most of the time we can drive you right to your camp in the park; when we can’t, we drop you at the gate. Or the other way round: back to your hotel in Vilanculos or straight to Vilanculos airport.

How far is Vilanculos from Zinave National Park?

About 240 km, 6 to 7 hours.

Vilanculos is about 240 km from Zinave National Park by road, 6 to 7 hours’ drive. The road runs out to the EN1, then inland on gravel west to Mabote and on to the park, and the same way back. Past the EN1 it’s 4x4 only, and slow or impassable in the rains from about November to April.

Zinave is Mozambique’s first Big Five national park, on the Save River in Inhambane province, rewilded by ANAC and the Peace Parks Foundation, who have managed it together since 2015.

Yes. The road inland from the EN1 is gravel and sand, not tar, and a high-clearance 4x4 is essential, especially in the rains from about November to April. That's the car we send for this transfer, so you don't have to hire one or drive the road yourself.
Is it a taxi, a shuttle or a private driver?
Call it whichever you like: it's a private shuttle, a taxi booked ahead and a driver for the day, all in one. The 4x4 and the driver are just for your group, nobody else gets on, you choose when to leave, and we collect you at your hotel or your camp. It's one fixed price of $470 per car, not per seat, whichever way you're going.

How far is Vilanculos from Zinave, and how long is the drive?
Vilanculos is about 240 km from Zinave National Park by road, 6 to 7 hours' drive. From Vilanculos you go out to the EN1, then inland on the gravel road west to Mabote and on to the park, and the same road back the other way. It's a full day, so we leave early.
Do you run Zinave to Vilanculos as well?
Yes — exactly the same private 4x4 in the other direction, at the same $470. Heading back for a flight from Vilanculos airport? Send us the flight time and we'll leave early enough that you're not watching the clock.
Can you drive us right to our camp in the park?
Most of the time, yes. Tell us where you're staying in the park and we'll confirm whether we can drive right to it, or whether we'll meet you or drop you at the park gate instead.
Can a driver stay with us while we visit the park?
Yes. Instead of two separate runs, we can send a driver who stays for your visit and drives you back when you're ready. Tell us how many days and we'll quote it against the two-way option so you can pick.
What is Zinave National Park?
Zinave is Mozambique's first Big Five national park, on the Save River in Inhambane province, brought back by a rewilding programme that ANAC and the Peace Parks Foundation have run together since 2015. It's wild and uncrowded.
When is the best time to go?
ANAC, the park authority, recommends April to October. The dry months are also the easiest for the road; the rains from about November to April can make it slow or even impassable, so tell us your dates and we'll give you an honest read.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for one 4x4 with driver, carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group or bringing a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll send a bigger vehicle or a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Can we break the drive and sleep a night on the way?
Yes — the drive doesn't have to be done in one day. If you'd rather stop a night somewhere along the way and carry on in the morning, we'll drive it that way. Tell us where you want to stop and how many nights when you message, and we'll build the route around it and confirm the fare.
Is it dangerous to drive at night in Mozambique?
We wouldn't recommend tourists driving themselves at night: the roads are unfamiliar, lighting is limited, and animals and pedestrians share the roadside after dark. Our drivers are local and very experienced with night driving, so they know the roads and the conditions, so a late flight or an early start is no problem. And if part of your trip is self-drive, we can put a driver on that stretch too.
