How far is Ponta do Ouro from Tofo?

610 km, about 10h30.

Ponta do Ouro is about 610 km south of Tofo by road, about 10h30 door to door. The drive runs out through Inhambane and south on the EN1 for about 500 km to Maputo, then crosses the Maputo–Katembe bridge and runs about 121 km south on tar to the village. It’s paved the whole way, and a standard car does it comfortably.

Tofo and Ponta do Ouro are Mozambique’s two big diving towns, at either end of the southern coast: Tofo for manta rays and whale sharks, Ponta for its reefs and bottlenose dolphins. Plenty of trips take in both, and this is the one-car way between them.

How far is Ponta do Ouro from Tofo, and how long is the drive?
Ponta do Ouro is about 610 km south of Tofo by road, about 10h30 door to door. The road runs south on the EN1 to Maputo, about 500 km, then over the Maputo–Katembe bridge and about 121 km south on tar to Ponta. It's paved the whole way to the village. We stop when you need to stretch your legs or eat.
Is it a taxi, a shuttle or a private driver?
Call it whichever you like: it's a private shuttle, a taxi booked ahead and a driver for the day, all in one. The car and the driver are just for your group, nobody else gets on, you choose when to leave, and we collect you at your lodge. It's one fixed price of $390 per car, not per seat, whichever way you're going.
Do you run Ponta do Ouro to Tofo as well?
Yes, exactly the same private, door-to-door service in the other direction, at the same $390. Tell us your lodge in Ponta and where you're staying in Tofo, Barra or Tofinho, and we'll plan the day around it.
Can we break the drive and sleep a night on the way?
Yes, it's a long day, and it doesn't have to be done in one go. If you'd rather stop a night somewhere on the way, in Maputo for example, and carry on in the morning, we'll drive it that way. Tell us where and for how many nights when you message, and we'll confirm the fare for that plan.
Do I need a 4x4 to get to Ponta do Ouro?
Not for the drive itself: the road is tarred all the way to the village, and our standard car does it comfortably. What's still sandy is the village streets and many lodge access tracks. Check with your lodge whether you need a 4x4 to reach it and tell us when you book: we'll arrange one, priced separately.
Can you take us to Ponta Malongane instead?
Yes, on request. Ponta Malongane is a short way up the coast from Ponta do Ouro, but the last stretch is a sand track, and that usually means a 4x4. Tell us your lodge when you message, and we'll check the access and confirm the vehicle and the fare.
Can you collect us from Inhambane airport?
Yes. If you're flying in and heading straight down to Ponta, we meet your flight at Inhambane (INH) with your name on a sign and drive south from there. If you're only going to the beach, see our Inhambane airport transfer.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car (not a 4x4) carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing dive gear, boards or a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book.
How do I pay for the transfer?
In cash, or online with a payment link we send you in the WhatsApp chat. Whichever you choose, the price is the fixed $390 per car we agreed, with fuel and tolls included.

Is it dangerous to drive at night in Mozambique?
We wouldn't recommend tourists driving themselves at night: the roads are unfamiliar, lighting is limited, and animals and pedestrians share the roadside after dark. Our drivers are local and very experienced with night driving, so they know the roads and the conditions, and an early start for a long day like this one is no problem.
