Ilha de Moçambique is a coral island in the Mozambique Channel that was the Portuguese capital of East Africa, and its Stone Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 — inscribed for an architecture that fuses local, Portuguese, Arab and Indian building traditions. Arab traders settled here from the 10th century; the Portuguese built a port and naval base from 1507. Fort São Sebastião is the oldest complete fort still standing in sub-Saharan Africa, and the little chapel just beyond its walls, Nossa Senhora do Baluarte, is considered the oldest European building in the southern hemisphere.3 It’s the one thing to do here that has nothing to do with the water.Far north · a full day on foot
Zinave National Park is Mozambique’s first Big Five park — 4,091 km² inland from Vilanculos where rhino, elephant, lion, buffalo and leopard all walk again after more than 2,500 animals from 16 species were moved back in by Peace Parks Foundation and Mozambique’s ANAC, including a founding crash of 37 rhinos from 2022.4 It’s the closest bush to the Bazaruto coast and the easiest way to put a genuine safari next to your island days: we drive it as a private 4x4 transfer from Vilanculos, about 6–7 hours each way.Inland from Vilanculos · transfer $470 per vehicle

Maputo is the culture capital — markets, art, marrabenta and seafood. Far north, the UNESCO Stone Town on Ilha de Moçambique is the deepest history on the coast. Why the water is this good
Mozambique’s marine wildlife survives because much of the best coast is protected. The Bazaruto Archipelago was proclaimed a national park on 25 May 1971 — one of Africa’s oldest marine parks — specifically to protect its dugongs and marine turtles, and it has been managed by the conservation NGO African Parks since 2017.1
Those Bazaruto seagrass beds hold the last viable dugong population on the East African coast — up to around 250 individuals — which is why a ten-minute pause to scan the channel between Bazaruto and Benguerra is part of the island day, and why the reefs stay as healthy as they do.2 Doing these things well means doing them lightly: small boats, no-touch snorkeling, and operators who follow the park’s code.
