Mozambique’s marine life is world-class. Swim with whale sharks year-round, watch humpback whales from June to November, dive with manta rays off Tofo, and look for dugongs and turtles in the Bazaruto seagrass. Tofo is the wildlife-diving base; Vilanculos combines it with the islands.
Maputo is the culture capital — markets, art, marrabenta and seafood. Up the coast, Inhambane is one of southern Africa’s oldest ports, and Vilanculos rewards a slow morning: the market, a cooking lesson, and dawn on a fishing dhow. The layer beyond the beach.

Why the water is this good
A protected coast, on purpose.
Mozambique’s marine wildlife survives because much of the best coast is protected. The Bazaruto Archipelago was proclaimed a national park on 25 May 1971 — one of Africa’s oldest marine parks — specifically to protect its dugongs and marine turtles, and it has been managed by the conservation NGO African Parks since 2017.1
Those Bazaruto seagrass beds hold the last viable dugong population on the East African coast — up to around 250 individuals — which is why a ten-minute pause to scan the channel between Bazaruto and Benguerra is part of the island day, and why the reefs stay as healthy as they do.2 Doing these things well means doing them lightly: small boats, no-touch snorkeling, and operators who follow the park’s code.
