The route

How far Chizavane is from Maputo.

Praia de Chizavane is 269 km from Maputo, about five hours door to door. It sits on the EN1 roughly 40 km north of Xai-Xai and around 30 km short of Chidenguele — close enough to both that people often describe it as one or the other, which is why finding a straight answer on where it actually is can be difficult.

The road is tar the whole way up the EN1. What isn’t tar is the final approach: the last stretch off the main road down to the beach lodges is dirt, so if you’re staying somewhere down there, mention it when you book and we’ll make sure the right vehicle comes.

Zona Braza Beach Lodge is the best-known place along this stretch, and we drop there regularly — but Chizavane is the beach, not the lodge, and we’ll take you to whichever address you’re booked into.

It runs the same in reverse. Chizavane to Maputo is the identical private, door-to-door service for the same $205, usually booked for the return flight out of the capital.

Praia de Chizavane is a beach on the Gaza coast, about 40 km north of Xai-Xai on the EN1 and roughly 30 km south of Chidenguele. It sits almost midway between the two, which is why it gets described as both — sources file it under Xai-Xai as often as they give it its own name. From Maputo it's 269 km, about five hours.
Is this the transfer for Zona Braza Beach Lodge?
Yes. Zona Braza is the best-known lodge on the Chizavane beach and we drop there regularly — but this transfer is to Chizavane the place, so whichever address along that stretch you're booked into, we'll take you to the door. Tell us the lodge name when you message.
Do I need a 4x4 for the lodge access road?
Possibly, for the last part. The EN1 is tar all the way, but the final approach off the main road down to the beach lodges is dirt. Our standard cars handle a good dirt road; a soft or rained-on one is a different matter. Tell us where you're staying when you book and we'll send a 4x4 if it's needed.
How long does the drive take?
About five hours door to door for the 269 km. It's a straight run north on the EN1 past Xai-Xai, with the turn-off and the dirt approach at the end. We drive it at a sensible pace with stops when you want them.
Do you run Chizavane back to Maputo as well?
Yes — exactly the same private, door-to-door service in the other direction, at the same $205. Tell us your date, your pickup point and your flight time if you have one, and we'll build the drive around it.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car — not a 4x4 — carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Can we carry on to Chidenguele or back down to Xai-Xai?
Yes — Chidenguele is about 30 km further north and Xai-Xai about 40 km back south, both on the same coast, and we drive all of them. Tell us the route and dates and we'll quote the legs together.
