    The dirt road to the lodges can go soft after rain. Tell us where you’re staying and we’ll check the road and send a 4x4 if it needs one.

    What if we’re driving after dark?

    No problem. Our drivers are local and very experienced on these roads at night, so a late flight or an early start is fine.

Praia de Chizavane is 269 km from Maputo by road, about 5 hours door to door. The road runs north on the EN1, paved, past Xai-Xai, then down a dirt road to the beach. Chizavane sits about 40 km north of Xai-Xai and roughly 30 km south of Chidenguele.

Praia de Chizavane is 269 km from Maputo by road, about 5 hours door to door. The road runs north on the EN1 past Xai-Xai, with a dirt road down to the beach at the end. We stop on the way when you need to stretch your legs, and we leave when it suits you.
Where exactly is Chizavane?
Praia de Chizavane is a beach on the Gaza coast, about 40 km north of Xai-Xai and roughly 30 km south of Chidenguele. It sits almost midway between the two, which is why you'll see it described as either.
Is this the transfer for Zona Braza Beach Lodge?
Yes. Zona Braza is the best-known lodge on Chizavane beach and we drop there regularly, but we'll take you to whichever address along that stretch you're booked into. Tell us the lodge name when you message.
Do you run Chizavane to Maputo as well?
Yes, exactly the same private, door-to-door service in the other direction, at the same $205. Tell us your date, your pickup and your flight time if you have one, and we'll plan the drive around it.
Can we carry on to Chidenguele or back down to Xai-Xai?
Yes. Chidenguele is about 30 km further north and Xai-Xai about 40 km back south, both on the same coast, and we drive all of them. Tell us the route and dates and we'll quote the legs together.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car (not a 4x4) carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing fishing gear, boards or a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Is the transfer car a 4x4? My lodge says I need one.
Our standard transfer cars aren't 4x4s, so if your lodge sits at the end of a sand or rough access track, you must tell us when you book. The last stretch down to the Chizavane lodges is dirt: our standard cars handle it when it's firm, but a soft or rain-soaked road needs a 4x4. Check with your accommodation, tell us on WhatsApp, and we'll send the right vehicle.
Is it dangerous to drive at night in Mozambique?
We wouldn't recommend tourists driving themselves at night: the roads are unfamiliar, lighting is limited, and animals and pedestrians share the roadside after dark. Our drivers are local and very experienced with night driving, so they know the roads and the conditions, so a late flight or an early start is no problem. And if part of your trip is self-drive, we can put a driver on that stretch too.
