What draws people is the combination: high dunes and white beach on the ocean side, and freshwater lakes just inland — Lake Nhambavale, the largest of them, runs for around 23 km behind the coast. Having both within a few kilometres of each other is unusual on this coastline, and it’s why the lodges here tend to be spread out rather than clustered in a town.

That spread matters for the drive. Chidenguele’s accommodation sits down separate access roads off the main route, several of them sand, so tell us the lodge name when you book and we’ll confirm whether your drop needs a 4x4 before you travel rather than at the turn-off.

Do you run Chidenguele back to Maputo as well?
Yes — exactly the same private, door-to-door service in the other direction, at the same $210. Given the distance, most people book both legs at once. Tell us your dates, your pickup point and your flight time if you have one, and we'll build the drives around them.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car — not a 4x4 — carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Can we stop at Xai-Xai or Chizavane on the way?
Yes — both are on the same road, and it's your car for the journey. A stop for lunch or a look at the beach is simply a matter of telling your driver. If you'd rather stay a night somewhere en route and carry on the next day, say so when you book and we'll build the route around it.
Is the drive comfortable over that distance?
It's paved the whole way on the EN1 with a driver who runs this coast regularly, and it's your own vehicle rather than a shared seat — so you set the pace and the stops. Five hours is a real stretch of road, so we'd rather you arrive relaxed than rushed.
