Chidenguele is 278 km north of Maputo by road, about 5 hours door to door. The road runs north on the EN1, paved, roughly 70 km beyond Xai-Xai, then down the access road to your lodge.

Chidenguele is high dunes and white beach with freshwater lakes just inland; Lake Nhambavale, the largest, runs for around 23 km behind the coast. That’s why the lodges are spread along the coast rather than in a town, several of them down sand roads, so tell us yours when you book.

How far is Chidenguele from Maputo, and how long is the drive?
Chidenguele is 278 km from Maputo by road, about 5 hours door to door. It's a straight run north on the EN1, roughly 70 km beyond Xai-Xai. We stop on the way when you need to stretch your legs or eat, and we leave when it suits you.
Do I need a 4x4 to reach my lodge?
It depends on the lodge. The EN1 is tar the whole way, but Chidenguele's lodges sit down separate access roads off the main road, and several of those are sand. Tell us the lodge name when you book and we'll confirm what your drop needs. We have 4x4s and will arrange one, but we don't run the lodges, so we check each access road with you.
Do you run Chidenguele to Maputo as well?
Yes, exactly the same private, door-to-door service in the other direction, at the same $210. Most people book both legs at once: tell us your dates, your pickup and your flight time if you have one, and we'll plan the drives around them.
Can you collect us from Maputo airport?
Yes, at the same $210. We meet your flight at Maputo airport (MPM) with your name on a sign and drive straight up the coast. Send us your flight number and we'll track it.
Can we stop at Xai-Xai or Chizavane on the way?
Yes, both are on the same road, and it's your car for the day. A stop for lunch or a look at the beach is just a matter of telling your driver. If you'd rather stay a night on the way and carry on the next day, say so when you book and we'll build the route around it and confirm the fare.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for a standard car (not a 4x4) carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing fishing gear, boards or a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll put you in a larger vehicle or send a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Is it dangerous to drive at night in Mozambique?
We wouldn't recommend tourists driving themselves at night: the roads are unfamiliar, lighting is limited, and animals and pedestrians share the roadside after dark. Our drivers are local and very experienced with night driving, so they know the roads and the conditions, so a late flight or an early start is no problem. And if part of your trip is self-drive, we can put a driver on that stretch too.
