Founded by the Portuguese as Lourenço Marques and renamed Maputo at independence in 1976, the city wears its history on the street: Art Deco and colonial facades, jacaranda-lined avenues, a market culture that folds Portuguese, Indian and African Mozambique into one, and the deepest food scene in the country.   1. Ride to the Maputo Central Railway Station

    The Maputo Central Railway Station (Estação Central dos CFM) is a Beaux-Arts landmark on Praça dos Trabalhadores, designed in 1905, inaugurated on 19 March 1910 and finished in 1916, with a mint-green copper dome, wrought-iron verandas and a grand concourse that now doubles as a live-jazz venue. In 2009 Newsweek ranked it among the most beautiful stations in the world.     The Baixa is Maputo’s downtown grid, a walkable open-air museum of Art Deco and colonial facades.     The Mercado Central (Central Market) is the city’s belly — a century-old market hall on Avenida 25 de Setembro stacked with fish straight off the bay, piri-piri, cashews, spices, capulanas and baskets under one roof.     The Fortaleza de Maputo (Fort Nossa Senhora da Conceição) is a squat, red-walled Portuguese fort rebuilt in the 1940s over an 18th-century original, now home to a military-history museum run by Eduardo Mondlane University. Inside its walls are cannons, colonial-era relics and the tomb of Ngungunhane, the last emperor of the Gaza state, whose remains were returned from exile in 1985.Near the port · museum

  7. See the elephant foetuses at the Natural History Museum

    The Museu de História Natural holds what its keepers at Eduardo Mondlane University call a collection probably unique in the world: elephant foetuses at every stage from one month to twenty-two, the full arc of an elephant pregnancy in a row of glass jars. Around them sit some 200 mammals, 10,137 birds and 176,527 insects, inside a Manueline-revival palace the city council built for them in 1933.   8. Cross the Katembe bridge for seafood & the skyline

    The Maputo–Katembe Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in Africa — a roughly 3 km span opened in 2018 that carries you across the bay in minutes to Katembe, where the prawns come by the kilo and the whole Maputo skyline lines up across the water at sunset.     Eating is one of the best things to do in Maputo, full stop — the deepest, most varied food scene in Mozambique.   10. Walk the Marginal to the sea

    The Marginal is Maputo’s waterfront avenue, running northeast out of the city along the bay past coconut stalls, joggers at dusk and the long shallow beach the capital swims at. Follow it far enough and it delivers you to Costa do Sol, the 1930s seafront restaurant at the end of the road that has been the city’s Sunday-lunch institution for generations. Maputo entry fees are low: nearly everything on the list above is free to walk into, and the paid sights cost between 50 and 900 meticais. Almost no guide to the city publishes these, so here they are in one table, each traced to the body that charges them. Pay in meticais — cards are unreliable at museum doors and at the park gate.

A note on the museum fee: Eduardo Mondlane University hasn’t published a ticket price since the Natural History Museum reopened in October 2025, so the 300 MT is what’s charged at the door today, confirmed locally in July 2026 — you won’t find it anywhere else online. The age rule is worth knowing if you’re travelling with kids: it’s the same 11-and-over cut-off for Mozambicans and foreigners, and under-11s go in free either way. Everything else in the table comes straight from the body that sets it, and fees do change; treat these as the July 2026 picture.

Day trips from Maputo trade the city grid for water and wildlife: an island across the bay, a UNESCO wilderness south of town, a short hop over the bridge for seafood, or a long push west to Kruger. Each makes an escape without moving hotels.

Inhaca Island

Inhaca Island is a marine-reserve island about 35 km across Maputo Bay, reached by passenger ferry in roughly two hours. It draws travelers for its coral reefs, quiet beaches and seafood, and hosts Eduardo Mondlane University’s long-running marine-biology research station. Two boats run the route — the Kanyaka on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to Sundays, the smaller Ribwene Tuesdays to Thursdays — both leaving Maputo around 08:00 and turning back at 15:00. There’s no pre-booking, so come early and let the sea decide the timetable.

Maputo National Park

Maputo National Park is a mosaic of dunes, lakes, savanna, wetlands and reef spanning more than 1,700 km² on the coast south of the city, protecting a resident herd of around 400 elephants. Proclaimed an elephant reserve back in 1932, it was named Mozambique’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025. A day trip pairs a game drive with a wild, empty stretch of coast. Gates open at 06:00 from October to March and 07:00 the rest of the year, and international visitors pay 900 MT a day plus a vehicle fee.

Katembe, across the bay

Katembe is the shore directly across Maputo Bay, minutes away over the Maputo–Katembe suspension bridge — the longest of its kind in Africa. Kruger, across the border

Kruger National Park lies over the South African border west of Maputo, close enough that operators in the capital sell it as a single very long day — a pre-dawn start, a border post, a few hours of Big Five game viewing and a late return. It works, but it’s a lot of road for the time in the park, and it’s honestly better as an overnight. We don’t drive the border ourselves, so treat this as a route rather than a trip we run. Two passenger ferries run between Maputo and Inhaca Island: the Kanyaka (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to Sundays) and the smaller Ribwene (Tuesdays to Thursdays). Both leave the Maputo ferry harbour around 08:00 — 11:00 on Fridays for the Kanyaka — and return from Inhaca at 15:00, taking about two hours each way. One-way fares run 280 MT for the economy deck up to 680 MT for the upper deck, tickets are sold on the day rather than pre-booked, and sea conditions can move the timetable, so arrive at least an hour early.
What food is Maputo known for?
Maputo is known for seafood cooked simply and well — grilled prawns and crayfish under piri-piri, the chilli-garlic sauce of the Mozambican coast.
