Getting to Vilankulo

By Air (The Easy Way)

Vilankulo Airport (VNX) is small but well-connected. You can fly in from:

  • Maputo — LAM Mozambique Airlines and smaller carriers operate regular flights. The flight takes about 1.5 hours and saves you a long drive.
  • Johannesburg — Airlink operates direct flights to Vilankulo, making it easy to connect from international hubs. Flight time is around 2.5 hours.
  • Inhambane/other domestic routes — Occasional connections via smaller charter services.

Book flights early, especially during peak season (June-October). Seats fill up fast on the Johannesburg route. VNX is a relaxed little airport — don’t expect lounges and duty-free, but do expect a warm welcome. If you’ve booked with us, we’ll be right there to pick you up. Check our visa guide for entry requirements.

By Road (The Adventure)

Driving to Vilankulo is an experience in itself. The EN1 highway runs the length of Mozambique’s coast, and the stretch from Maputo to Vilankulo is roughly 700 km (8-10 hours depending on conditions and stops). The road is paved and generally in decent shape, though you’ll hit some rough patches.

From Johannesburg: Many travelers drive from South Africa. Cross at Ressano Garcia/Lebombo border, drive through Maputo, and head north on the EN1. Total journey is about 1,200 km — most people break it up with a night in Inhambane or Maxixe along the way.

Tips for driving:

  • Start early and aim to arrive before dark. Night driving is risky due to unlit vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Fill up your tank whenever you see a fuel station. Gaps between stations can be long.
  • A 4x4 isn’t essential for the EN1 but is useful for sandy side roads around Vilankulo.
  • Bring your vehicle documents, third-party insurance (available at the border), and patience.

By Bus

Regular intercity buses run from Maputo to Vilankulo along the EN1. The journey takes 10-12 hours and costs around MT 1,500-2,500 ($25-40). It’s not luxurious, but it works. Buses usually depart early morning. Book a day ahead if possible.

Chapas (local minibuses) cover the same route in stages, but they’re slower, more crowded, and only recommended if you’re feeling truly adventurous. We’d suggest the bus or flying for most visitors.

Getting Around Vilankulo

Tuk-Tuks

The go-to for getting around town. Tuk-tuks are everywhere, cheap (MT 50-150 for a ride within town), and the drivers know every corner of Vilankulo. Agree on a price before you get in — it’s standard practice, not haggling.

Walking

Vilankulo’s center is compact enough to explore on foot. The market, restaurants, and waterfront are all within walking distance of most accommodation. Just bring water, a hat, and sunscreen — it gets warm. Check our packing list for what to bring.

Getting to the Islands

The Bazaruto Archipelago is accessed by boat from Vilankulo’s waterfront. We run regular boat trips to Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, and Santa Carolina islands. The crossing takes 30-60 minutes depending on the island and sea conditions. There’s no public ferry — you’ll need to book a transfer or join one of our tours.

Our Recommendation

Fly into Vilankulo if time is precious. Drive if you want the full Mozambique road-trip experience (and have a couple of extra days). Once you’re here, leave the logistics to us — we handle island transfers, airport pickups, and everything in between. Get in touch and we’ll sort your transport.
