Tofo to Massinga transfers

A Tofo to Massinga transfer is a private, door-to-door car journey 140 km up the coast from Praia do Tofo to the district town of Massinga — your own vehicle and driver, about two and a half hours, on tar the whole way. It replaces the chapa-ferry-bus relay that eats most of a day, and it runs both directions for the same price, so it works as the way north and the way back to your flight. Tell us your date and we’ll drive it.

$125 ≈ 8,000 MZN

Per private vehicle · one way · same price in either direction. We confirm the fare before you book.

  • A private car with driver — just your group, no shared seats and no waiting for it to fill
  • Door to door — collected at your Tofo lodge, dropped at your address in Massinga
  • Both directions, same $125 — Tofo to Massinga or Massinga to Tofo
  • Fuel and tolls included — the fare we agree is the whole fare, nothing added on the road

Staying somewhere that needs a 4x4? You must tell us when you book. Our standard transfer cars aren’t 4x4s — we have 4x4s and will gladly arrange one, but we don’t run the lodges, so we can’t know which access roads need one. Check with your accommodation and let us know.

No ferry queue, no bus station

How the Tofo–Massinga
transfer works.

One WhatsApp message books the whole run up the EN1 — no chapa to Inhambane, no ferry across the bay, no standing at Maxixe waiting for a northbound seat. Here’s how it goes.

  1. 1

    You tell us your date

Your travel date, group size, which direction you’re going, and the address at each end. A sentence is enough to start.

  2. 2

    We confirm and quote it

We check availability and send a fixed $125 one-way fare, the same in either direction — fuel and tolls included, with nothing added on the road.

  3. 3

    We collect you and drive

Your driver picks you up at your Tofo door, runs in to Inhambane and up the EN1 from Maxixe, and drops you at your address in Massinga.

The route

How to get from Tofo to Massinga.

The drive from Tofo to Massinga takes about 2 hours 30 minutes — roughly 140 km, and paved from end to end. You leave Praia do Tofo on the 22 km road in to Inhambane city, cross to Maxixe and join the EN1, Mozambique’s coastal highway, then run north through Morrumbene and into Massinga district until the town itself appears on the road. There’s no gravel and no river crossing on the way; the whole journey is one continuous stretch of tar, which is exactly why it’s a half-morning rather than a whole day.

Massinga is a working district town in Inhambane Province rather than a beach destination — a market, fuel, banks and the district administration strung along the highway. Travellers pass through it for two reasons: it’s the road junction for the coast east of the EN1, and it’s the district that holds the Pomene Estuary. The Pomene National Reserve, established in 1964, lies inside Massinga district and protects dune forest, savannah, mangroves and swamp, with wildebeest, impala and duiker on land and flamingos and pelicans on the water (ANAC, Mozambique’s national conservation authority).

Doing it on public transport is possible and cheap, and worth knowing if you’re travelling light: a chapa from Tofo to Inhambane, the ferry across the bay to Maxixe, then a northbound bus or chapa up the EN1. It costs a few dollars and takes most of a day once you count the waiting at each change. As a private transfer it’s one car and one driver from your door to your address, at a fare agreed before you travel — which is the difference worth paying for with luggage or a check-in time.

Your address, not a junction

Where in Massinga we drop you.

We drop you at your address in Massinga town, wherever on the EN1 it sits — a guesthouse, the market, the bus stand for an onward connection north, or a friend’s gate. The $125 covers the town itself, and because the highway runs straight through it, there’s no last-leg problem the way there is at Inhassoro: the road goes to Massinga, not past it.

The coast east of Massinga is a separate quote, and we’d rather price it honestly now than surprise you at the turnoff. The beach lodges out that way sit a good run east of the highway, and the access to some of them is sand rather than tar — which means a 4x4, and more of the day than the town run takes. Send us the name of where you’re staying and we’ll tell you immediately which of the two journeys you’re booking and what it costs. The same is true of the Pomene Estuary further south in the district: that’s a high-clearance 4x4 run, priced on our Tofo to Pomene transfer page.
