Tofo is 198 km from Pomene by road, a drive of about 4h20. The road runs through Inhambane and Maxixe and north on the EN1, Mozambique’s main coastal highway, and just north of Massinga turns off onto a sand and dirt track out to the Pomene estuary. That last stretch is 4x4 only, and heavier going in the rains from about November to April.

Pomene is a near-deserted peninsula where a mangrove estuary meets the open ocean. Most of it sits inside the Pomene National Reserve, created in 1964 to protect the wildebeest and the smallest conservation area in the country (Portal do Governo de Moçambique); its dunes, mangroves and estuary draw flamingos and pelicans (ANAC).

It's also why this fare is higher than our tarred routes: it's a different vehicle, not just a longer drive.
Is it a taxi, a shuttle or a private driver?

The 4x4 and the driver are just for your group, nobody else gets on, you choose when to leave, and we collect you at your lodge or the airport. Can a driver stay with us while we visit Pomene?

Can we stop in Massinga or Inhambane on the way?
Yes. Inhambane is on the way out of Tofo, and Massinga is on the EN1 just before the turn-off to Pomene, so it's an easy place to stop for supplies if you're self-catering. Tell us what you'd like to stop for when you message and we'll build it into the drive.
What is Pomene?
Pomene is a near-deserted peninsula in Massinga district, Inhambane province, where a mangrove estuary meets the open ocean, with the ruins of a colonial-era beach hotel on the rocks at Ponta da Barra Falsa. Most of it sits inside the Pomene National Reserve, created by Diploma Legislativo 2496 of 4 July 1964 to protect the wildebeest, and the smallest conservation area in Mozambique (Portal do Governo de Moçambique). It's known for its fishing and for having almost nobody else around.
When is the best time to go?
The dry season — roughly May to October — is easiest for the sand track. The rains from about November to April can make the final stretch slow or heavy going, so tell us your dates and we'll give you an honest read on the road.
How many people and how much luggage can you take?
The price on this page is for one 4x4 with driver, carrying up to four passengers and their luggage. If you're a bigger group, or bringing fishing gear, dive kit or a lot of bags, just say so when you message: we'll send a bigger vehicle or a second car, and confirm the fare before you book. We'd rather size the car to you than squeeze you in.
Is it dangerous to drive at night in Mozambique?
We wouldn't recommend tourists driving themselves at night: the roads are unfamiliar, lighting is limited, and animals and pedestrians share the roadside after dark. Our drivers are local and very experienced with night driving, so they know the roads and the conditions, so a late flight or an early start is no problem. And if part of your trip is self-drive, we can put a driver on that stretch too.
