Whale sharks, whales, weather, and what's running each month.

Tofo is a year-round destination with one specific gift: whale sharks every month of the year. The rest of the calendar runs in seasons too — here's the local read on which month fits your trip.

The short version

May to October if you want it
easy.

The dry months are the easiest weather, the calmest seas, and the best dive visibility. June through November adds humpback whales. October through March is whale-shark prime. There’s no bad month in Tofo — only what you’re trading for what.

By what you came for

Activity-
by-activity.

Year-round · peak Oct – Mar

Whale shark snorkel

Tofo is one of the few places on earth where whale sharks are seen every month. Numbers vary; October to March is typically more reliable when the warm-water plankton blooms intensify.

June – November · peak Aug – Oct

Humpback whales

Humpbacks pass on their migration to and from Antarctic feeding grounds. Sightings on ocean safaris are common in season; calves visible from August.

May – October

Diving — visibility

The dry season has the calmest sea conditions and best visibility. Tofo’s plankton-rich water trades visibility for big animals — Manta Reef, Office Reef, and Salon all shine in these months.

Year-round · peak May – Oct

Diving — manta rays

Reef and giant mantas are seen year-round at Manta Reef. Cleaning station behavior is most reliable in the cooler dry months.

Year-round · bigger swell Apr – Sep

Surf

Tofo Beach has mellow beach breaks all year; Tofinho’s point break works best on south swells through the cooler months. Beginners welcome year-round.

May – October

Calm-sea ocean safaris

Easiest boat days. Light wind, low swell, an easy entry from the beach launch. Worth biasing toward this window if you’re prone to seasickness.

December — the special case

High season, in every sense.

December is one of the busiest months of the year along the southern Mozambican coast. Tofo fills up with South African school-holiday travelers, divers chasing whale sharks, and Mozambicans on family visits. Lodges, dive shops, and ocean safari operators all run hot.

What that looks like, practically:

  • Lodges sell out months ahead. If you have a specific place in mind, book by August.
  • Whale sharks are typically active. December sits in the high-reliability window.
  • The water is at its warmest. Comfortable for long dives and ocean safaris.
  • No ATM in town — and what’s nearby runs dry. The petrol-station BCI ATMs 2–3 km out fill up fast in December. Bring backup cards and clean foreign notes.
  • Rain is afternoon-shaped. Mornings often start clear; storms roll through later.
  • Humpbacks are mostly gone. The migration tail ends in November; December is whale-shark, not humpback, season.

Verdict: December is one of the better months to be in Tofo if you plan ahead. It is not a “show up and figure it out” month.

Common questions

Still on your mind.

When's the best time to visit Tofo?
May to October if you want the easiest weather and best dive visibility. October to March if whale sharks are the main draw. June to November if you also want humpback whales. There's no "wrong" month in Tofo — just trade-offs.
When are whale sharks most reliable?
Year-round, but typically best from October through March. The plankton blooms that draw them in pulse strongest during the warmer months. Operators will tell you what the past week has looked like before you book.
Is December busy in Tofo?
Yes. South African school holidays plus Christmas plus New Year fill up lodges, dive shops, and beach restaurants. Sea is warm, days are long, but book everything — lodge, transfer, dives, ocean safari — well in advance.
When can I see humpback whales?
June through November, with peak sightings August through October. Calves visible from August. Humpback ocean safaris run alongside whale shark trips through these months.
When is the surf best?
Mellow beachies work year-round at Tofo Beach. The point break at Tofinho lights up on south swells, most reliably from April through September. Big-swell winter days at Tofinho are world-class.
When is dive visibility worst?
Visibility drops in the rainier summer months — January and February especially. The trade-off: those are the months when whale shark numbers peak. The plankton that lowers viz is the same plankton drawing the big animals in.
When is the cheapest time to visit Tofo?
The European spring shoulders — March to early May — and the post-New-Year dip in February. Lodge rates drop and dive shops have more flexibility for last-minute bookings.
How does Tofo weather differ from Vilanculos?
Tofo runs a couple of degrees cooler in winter and slightly wetter year-round than Vilanculos. Both share the same dry-season window (May–October) and the same humpback season (June–November). Whale sharks are Tofo's specific story; the Bazaruto Archipelago is Vilanculos's.
