Turquoise water and dunes of the Bazaruto Archipelago

The best time to visit Vilanculos.

Month-by-month, the honest version.

Vilankulo is a year-round destination — but each season has a personality. This is the local read on what's running when, and which month fits which kind of trip.

The short version

May to October is the
easy answer.

Cool mornings, light wind, the flat-water window for boat trips, and from June onwards, humpback whales passing through. If you want the most predictable Vilankulo, plan for May through October.

The green months — November through April — are warmer in the water, cheaper at the lodge, and quieter, with the trade-off of short afternoon storms and less reliable boat days. December is a special case — busy, expensive, fully booked.

By what you came for

Activity-
by-activity.

May – October

Calm-sea boat days

The flat-water window. Easiest sea conditions for the islands, snorkeling, dhow trips. Trade winds are gentle and water visibility is at its best.

June – December · peak Aug – Oct

Whale watching

Humpbacks pass on their migration to the warm Mozambique Channel. Sightings from the boat are common in season. Calves visible from August.

May – October

Snorkeling & reef dives

Best visibility coincides with calm-sea season. Two Mile Reef shines in these months. Off-season is fine but viz is lower.

August – October

Kite surfing

The southerly trade winds switch on. Vilankulo Bay is one of the most reliable flat-water kite spots on the coast.

Year-round

Sunset dhow

Calmer evenings May–Oct, but warmer water and softer light through the green months. The trip works any time the wind is light.

November – April

Hot-water swimming

Sea temperature climbs into the high 20s. The dry months are cooler in the water than visitors expect — the green season is when the sea is warmest.

December — the special case

High season, in every sense.

December is one of the two busiest months of the year in Vilankulo (the other is the European summer holidays). South African schools break, Christmas and New Year stack on top of each other, and Mozambicans travel home to family. The town fills up.

What that looks like, practically:

  • Lodges sell out months ahead. If you want to stay at a specific place, book by August.
  • Flights cost more. Airlink JNB–VNX seats are tight from mid-December through early January.
  • ATMs run dry. Cash demand spikes — both from locals withdrawing salaries before the holidays and from tourists. Bring backup cards and clean foreign notes.
  • Day trip operators get busy. Book your Bazaruto day, dhow trip, and whale watching well ahead.
  • The water is warm. December sea temperatures are at the upper end of the year — great for long swims and snorkeling.
  • Rain is short and afternoon-shaped. Mornings often start clear; the storms roll through later.

Verdict: December is a wonderful time to be here if you plan ahead. It is not a “show up and figure it out” month.

Common questions

Still on your mind.

What's the best time to visit Vilankulo overall?
May to October is the easiest window — dry, cool mornings, calm seas, light wind. June through November adds humpback whales. If you want flexibility on weather and the most reliable boat days, that's your window.
When is the cheapest time to visit Vilankulo?
The green months — February to April. Lodge prices drop, fewer travelers, warmer sea water. Trade-off: short afternoon storms, less reliable boat weather, occasional cyclone risk (rare in southern Mozambique).
Is December a good time to visit Vilankulo?
It's one of the busiest months. South African school holidays plus Christmas plus New Year all stack up. Sea is warm, days are long, but lodges fill up months ahead and ATMs run low on cash. Book everything — flights, lodge, day trips — well in advance.
When can I see whales in Vilankulo?
Humpbacks pass June through December. Peak is August to October, when they're close to shore with their calves on the way back south. Year-round residents (dolphins, occasional dugongs) can be seen any month.
When does cyclone season run?
Officially November to April. Cyclones strong enough to affect southern Mozambique (Inhambane province, where Vilankulo is) are rare — the larger systems track further north. We monitor forecasts daily in season and reschedule trips if weather turns.
When is kite surfing best in Vilankulo?
August to October. The southerly trade winds become reliable, and Vilankulo Bay becomes one of the better flat-water kite spots in southern Africa.
What's the weather like in April?
A shoulder month. Daytime highs around 29 °C, water still warm from summer, and rain has dropped sharply from the green-season peak (about 50 mm for the month). Often the sweet spot — warm enough to swim long, calm enough to boat, fewer travelers than peak.
When is the rainiest month?
January, with about 156 mm of rain across the month. That’s typically afternoon storms rather than all-day rain — mornings often start clear. The dry months (June through August) average under 21 mm each.
