No desk, no queue

How renting a car
with us works.

Renting through EKAYA takes one WhatsApp message and a reply, not a counter and a stack of forms. Here’s the whole thing.

  1. 1

    You tell us your dates

Your dates, where you’re staying, and roughly what you’ll do with the car. A sentence is enough to start.

  2. 2

We confirm availability and quote it

We check the car is free for your dates and send an honest all-in rate — no hidden fees, no pressure.

  3. 3

    We bring it to you

We deliver to your accommodation or meet you at Inhambane Airport, sort the paperwork on the spot, and you drive off.

Pickup & range

Where we’ll bring the car — and where you can take it.

We deliver and collect around Tofo, Barra, and Inhambane town — your guesthouse, a beach house, or Inhambane Airport — and the car is ready when you are. Most rentals are for getting between the beaches and the dive spots at your own pace.

Going further afield? Tell us the route you have in mind and we’ll sort the handover, including one-way trips and a driver if you’d rather not drive every leg yourself.

New to the area? See getting to Tofo and things to do — then a car is how you reach the rest of the coast. Heading off the tarmac up the coast? See 4x4 rental in Mozambique.

Inhambane town & airport

Renting a car in Inhambane.

Car rental in Inhambane works exactly the same as in Tofo — we cover Tofo, Barra and Inhambane town as one area, and bring the 4x4 to you. That means your guesthouse on the peninsula, a house in town, or a handover at Inhambane Airport (INH) the moment you land. Tell us the flight number and we’ll be there.

Two things are worth knowing before you drive here, and no booking site will tell you either of them.

The bay crossing doesn’t take cars. Inhambane and Maxixe sit facing each other across Inhambane Bay, and the dhow and motor-launch crossings locals use all day are passenger-only — about 20 to 30 minutes and a handful of meticais on foot. With a vehicle you go around the bay instead: roughly 70 km and about an hour and a half. It catches out almost everyone who arrives with a car expecting the shortcut, so it’s worth building into your day if you’re heading north onto the EN1.

Inhambane Airport is small, and LAM-only. The only scheduled flights into INH are LAM Mozambique hops from Maputo (~50 min) and Vilanculos (~45 min) — there is no direct international or Johannesburg service, whatever the booking aggregators imply. The airport sits 22 km from Tofo on a paved road, so the drive from the terminal to the coast is genuinely easy. See how to get to Tofo for every route in.

No surprises

What's sorted before you drive off.

Insurance
Every rental comes insured. We'll spell out exactly what's covered and what the excess is before you agree to anything — no small-print surprises.
Deposit
A refundable deposit usually applies and comes straight back when the car returns in the same state. We confirm the amount up front, in writing.
Licence & ID
A valid driver's licence and photo ID is all you need to start. We'll confirm the age minimum and any extras when you message.
Real people
You deal with us directly on WhatsApp, in English or Portuguese, and we actually answer — usually within a few hours. People who know these roads, not a call centre on the other side of the world.

Before you ask

The questions we get most.

How much does it cost to rent a 4x4 in Tofo?
It depends on how many days you need it and the season. Message us with your dates and we'll send the current rate — no obligation, and no online payment.
What vehicle do you rent?
A 4x4 — the vehicle that actually handles the Tofo coast: the soft-sand tracks out to Barra and the beaches an ordinary car can't reach. Tell us your dates and we'll confirm availability.
Can you deliver the car to my accommodation or the airport?
In most cases, yes — to your place in Tofo or Barra, in Inhambane town, or at Inhambane Airport. Tell us where you're staying when you message and we'll build it in.
What do I need to rent — licence, deposit, age?
A valid driver's licence and photo ID at a minimum. A foreign photocard licence is accepted for short stays; a refundable deposit usually applies. We'll confirm the exact requirements, age minimum, and deposit when you message.
Can you arrange a driver as well?
Yes. If you'd rather not drive the sand tracks yourself, just say so and we'll pair you with a local driver who knows them. Mention it in your message and we'll quote it.
Do you rent for longer stays — weeks or months?
Yes. For a longer stay around Tofo and Inhambane — diving, surfing, or just settling in — we can arrange longer-term hire at a better daily rate. Message us with how long you need it.
Can I rent a car in Inhambane?
Yes — car rental in Inhambane works exactly like Tofo, because we cover the whole Tofo–Inhambane area as one. Tell us your dates and where you're based — Inhambane town, Tofo, or Barra — and we'll deliver the 4x4 to your accommodation or meet you at Inhambane Airport.
Can I take a rental car on the Inhambane–Maxixe ferry?
No — the boats across Inhambane Bay are passenger-only. The dhows and motor launches that run between Inhambane and Maxixe all day carry people, not vehicles, so the 20–30 minute crossing isn't a shortcut you can take with a car. Driving between the two means going around the bay: roughly 70 km, about an hour and a half. Worth planning into your day if you're heading north onto the EN1 — it's the thing that most surprises people who arrive with a rental.
Can you meet me at Inhambane Airport with the car?
Yes — send us your flight number and we'll be there when you land. Inhambane Airport (INH) is small and easy: the only scheduled flights in are LAM Mozambique hops from Maputo (~50 min) and Vilanculos (~45 min), so arrivals are quick and there's no hunting for a rental desk. From the terminal it's a 22 km paved drive to Tofo.
