This is 2,500 km of warm Indian Ocean coast where you can swim beside whale sharks all year, sail a dhow out to an island you’ll have to yourself, and snorkel reefs inside a national park. It’s the beach-and-islands trip Zanzibar and Mauritius were before the crowds found them — still wild, still uncrowded, and a fraction of the price of its Indian Ocean rivals.

Mozambique is famous for its Indian Ocean coast and the life along it. Tofo is one of the only places on earth to snorkel with whale sharks year-round, alongside manta rays and — June to December — humpback whales; the reefs sit inside national parks, and the Bazaruto seagrass shelters East Africa’s last dugong. Add Portuguese-influenced seafood, fiery piri-piri, and a culture found nowhere else — the only Portuguese-speaking country in East Africa, home to the UNESCO-listed island of Moçambique that gave it its name.

A coast you don’t have to share
This is the rare part: 2,500 km of shoreline with a fraction of the visitors of the famous islands — even in peak season, a Bazaruto sandbank rarely holds more than a few boats. Most first trips are the southern coast — the easiest to reach and where the diving, islands and beaches are. Each one is a different kind of trip:
